By Under The Covers Book Blog ~Reviewed by ANGELA & posted at Under the Covers Book BlogKim Law’s heroes from her Turtle Island series have the knack for riling up my emotions. Mark from Ex on the Beach did it and now Lucas in this story. Luckily, Ms. Law knows how to reel me right in making me fall deeper in love with her hero.Lucas is a single parent working full time who is on Turtle lsland to compete for the Yummy Santa contest. Roni and the rest of her friends are hosting this competition and well, this can dampen on the undeniable attraction she and Lucas have for each other. Will they let this stop them from having an affair? Nah, their attraction is strong , and not even their author could’ve stopped them if she wanted to. =)I actually liked Lucas from the start. I thought he was a stand up guy, very sweet and most definitely sexy. I love that he pursued her even when she tried to stay away from him. He knew how she felt and he didn’t want to let her go. My only problem with him was that there was a time when he demanded a bit too much from Roni a bit too soon. Knowing that he came with an instant family and Roni a jaded single gal; he should understand her fears and maybe give her some slack. Lucas does make it up in the end. He won my heart back leaving me with a happy tear or two.I didn’t expect Roni to end up with Lucas. From the last novel, I thought she would end up with Mark’s friend. It worked out well because Roni truly needed a man like Lucas. She’s been alone for quite some time , and it’s time she falls for someone who is stable and ready for a long term commitment. I’m glad she finally got her happy-ever-after.Next up is a novella called Two Turtle Island Doves. I will be about Kelly, Lucas’ friend who is also a contestant for the Yummy Santa Contest. There was a clear introduction of him in this book and from what I gather; he and his wife were in the middle of a divorce. Looks like his story will be about second chances and Christmas themed. I’m excited to get to it! I love second chances.Review provided by publisher

One reads to the end just to see which of the half dozen or so standard endings the author chooses.I liked the story, setting, and most characters. I did find myself skipping over page after page after page of soft porn, though. When the sex scenes are 3, 4, and 5 pages long, it's too much for my tastes. I don't read romance tales to get myself all hot and bothered, but for the story itself, and I felt this did not balance well. It did not make me want to read others in the series.

I decided to download it after reading a really emotional book and needed something fun and easy to read. A Negotiated Marriage was exactly what I wanted. I read it in less than 90 minutes and it was an extremely easy read.Molly and Luke have been married for three years, but not in the traditional way. They are married for convince and appearances. Luke is CEO of a company and needs a wife on his arm to look like a family man. Molly had her heartbroken by a man who didn't love her in return. Having a marriage without love, or sex was what she wanted in Luke too. After three years, the two decide to change their arrangement and become sexually involved. Their emotions toward each other change and their loveless marriage soon changes into something else.Like I said above, this is an extremely fast read. You start the book three years into Luke and Molly's marriage and the scenes are quick and short. The book has some erotic scenes that were not over the top and the dialogue was not cheesy. I enjoyed both characters and would have like to have more depth into Luke; he was kind of a mystery to me. He had potential to be an amazing book boyfriend. ;)I think this is a great free book I recommend to anyone wanting a fun read for FREE. If you enjoy books such as this I also recommend Marriage by Mistake by Abby GainesI give A Negotiated Marriage 3 Stars.

By OneStep I admit I am a sucker for a good "arrangement" story - and the high marks given this reasonably priced e-book seemed too good to be true. And they were. This was a total non-story. Nothing happened in this book. The "best" part of the book, the most interesting part, occurs before it even starts. With the arranged marriage itself. The book only covers the end of the story - when they start having sex. The writing style was dull and lifeless - which didn't help. I felt like I was reading one long synopses. Very choppy writing. No description, dry dry dry. The author doesn't even describe the characters themselves adequately - what do they look like for cripes sake? The female protagonist "whimpers" and "snarls" her way through the book, while her male counterpart "makes throaty sounds". Ugh. This really comes off as having been written by a 16 year old boy. Perhaps that's why the female protagonist was so hateful and difficult to like. She was spoiled, self centered, quick to anger (for no reason), and not very bright. If I were her "husband" I would run from her as quickly as possible - far, far away.I can't really go into all the reasons I didn't like this book. There are too many. No side characters. Awful, awful writing style. Same words used over & over & over again. Poor editing (there were a lot of typos). And of course, NO STORY. Nothing to see here! Move on!

Really immature and pedestrian By Picky User I really wanted to enjoy this book because I personally like reading stories about arranged or negotiated marriages that work out in the end. It's a common plot used in romance books, and what differentiates the good ones from the bad ones is the way that the plot is written and developed. Sadly, this one missed the mark entirely.I was really surprised to read that the author has been writing for many years because, in all honesty, this book read as though it was the author's very first attempt at writing and self-publishing. The characters were very undeveloped, and a main problem with that is the dialogue. The main character Molly's thought processes were truncated and incomplete and it was really hard for me to believe that this was supposed to be a sophisticated and successful businesswoman. Not to mention her poor decision regarding how she conducts her business investigations.I think this author also read some Harlequin authors who will begin a story in the present, then in the next chapter go back to a flashback to set up the background setting to explain the history of a character. I don't have a problem with that when it's done well, but it's so obvious that this author just saw something that another author did and tried to copy it. Only she didn't know how to execute it.I can't stress enough that the plot was cheesy, the dialogue was cheesy (I don't think even teenagers talk like this), and the characters were also very disappointing. There is nothing believable about anything in this plot and if I weren't stuck in an airplane for over 4 hours with nothing else to do, I wouldn't have finished this.

Christina Barnes has captivated this reader with her literary charm and wit, all the while touching on the pain and heartbreak that so often is experienced. Her short stories of love, fear, sadness, panic.....loss and our inability to care as much for ourselves as we do others.....had me giggling, crying, and laughing out loud at times. Her characters are front and center of each story as a tale unfolds....and we would all be hard pressed to not find ourselves in this wonderful compilation somewhere. Bravo to this great new author for her ability to weave a tale so magically while gently unpeeling a bit of ourselves deep within each one.

I enjoy a good book with positive anecdotes By AJBestWrites I enjoy a good book with positive anecdotes, and lessons that put us on the right track, but this time the book fell flat for me.I've analyzed my feelings on this book until I've turned blue in the face, and have procrastinated until I felt that I couldn't any longer. So here I am, moving along and trying to get my feelings out about this book without sounding contrary or trite.First, let's start with the positive aspects of the book. Ms. Barnes illustrated this book beautifully and quite uniquely. I'd love to have the talent she has. And, I found that it was very easy to grasp the, "And the moral of the story is..." point in each story. Now onto the less than exciting feelings that I had for this book. This book is designed as a book to help women exclusively, which in and of itself is not a bad thing. The problem for me is that I felt as if the author sat down and thought of every negative stereotype about the female gender and wrote a concise story about how we're wrong and how to make it better. It felt preachy and somewhat degrading. My next issue with the book was the fact that each story was very simplistic in nature and felt more like story time at the library than a book of empowering anecdotes. And as I wrap up my thoughts on this book I'll tell you why the book confused me. And this one was a biggie for me, almost a sense of false advertising if you will. On the back cover of the book it states:Are you the writer or do you feel more like the reader of your story? This is a collection of unlikely messengers bringing you 19 concepts to awaken the writing within you. Your thoughts are your pen and paper.Perhaps Ms. Barnes was using a metaphor here, and I'm sure she was, but it fell flat with me. I thought I understood the book (from the description from the publicity agent - who ultimately got the info from the author) to be for a writer. So perhaps this was MY folly, and I hope you will take that into consideration as you read this review.I do want to disclose that I didn't finish reading the book. Mostly because I felt preached at, and partially because the book made me feel sad that someone would see so many faults in a woman's character. I want to be uplifted in a book, not ride 19 waves of emotion in a book with each short story.Perhaps the stories would have been better suited for submission to a women's magazine where the point would have been seen as a shining example of what a woman can overcome, rather than an example of where womanhood has gon awry.

Even though it is aimed at women I really enjoyed the book and found it to be very well written with great humour and genuinely empowering advice. Me and my wife both love to write and have both experienced those times when you really want to put pen to paper but when you do you have nothing. Your mind goes blank and all those brilliant ideas you had are gone. The author has an excellent outlook on life that resonates strongly throughout this book and even though I have not had any kind of writers block for a while I still found myself writing more since reading it and enjoying the experience more and I found I could pull from more aspects of my life than I realised.Overall an excellent book that is well written, well presented and enjoyable to read. Highly recommended.

Harris Tucker is a former number one tennis star, retired for the past eight years and living a lavish life in Santa Barbara, California. Suddenly homeless, friendless and penniless, he finds himself resigned to working as a farmhand on a vineyard in the Santa Barbara hills -- which he is clearly too good for and makes sure everyone knows it. But it is through his interactions with the family employing him, especially the two young children and their neurotic, divorced mother, that he begins to grow up, and discover that there really can be life after tennis. Laura Walters returned to the family homestead with her two children after her divorce. For the past three years, she's lived with her father and younger brother and worked in the family grape growing business, in a steady but uneventful job. Reluctantly, she agrees to take on Harris Tucker as a farmhand, knowing his spoiled and selfish nature, and knowing he will be more work than help. Despite his ways, she can't help but notice how taken her kids are with him, and he with them, and finds herself falling for him, against her own better judgement and her family and friends' warnings. Through Harris and Laura's interactions, (they each believe they could run the other's life better) they challenge each other to confront their past demons so they can move forward with their own dreams and goals.

A Vintage Year, by Kate Preston

Review Review Rating:4 stars.Reviewed By Tracy A. Fischer for Readers' FavoriteIn A Vintage Year by author Kate Preston, we are offered almost an insider's look into the beautiful world of a vineyard. Follow the story of Harris Tucker, the former tennis star, as he takes a job as a farmhand after he's been left homeless and penniless. He believes the farmhand job is very much beneath him, but he needs to survive, and it's the only thing available to him. Meeting Laura Walters, the woman who's returned to her family homestead after her divorce to raise her two young children, to heal and to move forward from the difficulties in her past, Harris originally finds her neurotic and a bit difficult. Laura finds him spoiled and selfish. But together, and with their relationships with her delightful children, they learn both about themselves and each other. And it's through those discoveries that they just might fall in love.A Vintage Year is a lovely, lovely story. Author Kate Preston is skilled at creating characters that are multi-dimensional and so realistic that, by the end of the book, you'll truly feel as if they are friends. A Vintage Year would appeal to any reader who loves romance, a sweet story about people with complicated histories, or just a good, well-written novel that you'll enjoy from start to finish. This is the first book I've read by author Kate Preston, but it certainly won't be the last. I will be eagerly watching for her next offering, and sincerely hope that she's hard at work right now!

From the Author The idea for this story came from a simple question: What happens to professional athletes after they retire? Most professional athletes retire well before the rest of us normal people do. If they have spent the majority of their lives in the spotlight, what happens when that spotlight (and money) is no longer there? I could have chosen any sport, but since I love tennis, it seemed logical to come at it from that angle. I chose to have it take place with the beautiful backdrop of Santa Barbara, California because it's about as breathtaking place as you can imagine.

About the Author Kate lives in Montreal with her husband, three kids and their agoraphobic cat. She has been writing fiction for 20 years for fun, and when the kids were little, it was a sanity break. When not writing, working, doing laundry, grocery shopping or making dinner, she loves cooking (the real kind, not the kid-friendly kind), baking, playing tennis, cycling, hiking and generally spending time outdoors.

By valiant A Vintage YearBy Kate PrestonBlurb:…Harris Tucker is a former number one tennis star, retired for the past eight years and living a lavish life in Santa Barbara, California. Suddenly homeless, friendless and penniless, he finds himself resigned to working as a farmhand on a vineyard in the Santa Barbara hills -- which he is clearly too good for and makes sure everyone knows it. But it is through his interactions with the family employing him, especially the two young children and their neurotic, divorced mother, that he begins to grow-up, and discover that there really can be life after tennis…Even though the destination of A Vintage Year was predictable, it was a pleasant journey. There were a lot of complex characters, mostly believable; and the family dynamics were no crazier than those encountered in real life.Ms. Preston skillfully captured Harris’s range of emotions as he gradually realized that his life as a pampered child/world champion tennis star had now become that of an average, everyday Joe working for minimum wage. She made him likable as he grew from being a player who used everything and everyone to his advantage to becoming a responsible adult.I really enjoyed the way the wine and vineyard industry was woven throughout the story; and, knowing nothing about it myself, would have been just as susceptible to the ‘twine fertilizer’ story as Harris. On a slightly critical note, I felt like the ‘reek and stench’ of the barn was a little overdone. Barns I do know, and a barn that smells bad enough to make your eyes water is not a healthy barn, nor would it smell that bad if it was cleaned as often as in the story. There were some classic ‘David and Goliath’ elements to the story and in keeping with the ‘happily-ever-after’, the good guys won in the end.On the nuts-and-bolts side of it, it was formatted well for my Kindle. The cover is attractive, especially since I was reading it on a bleak, Mid-Western winter day! The blurb was interesting, although it might be a little unkind to call Laura ‘neurotic’. She is just an over-worked mom, trying to make ends meet and please everyone around her!Overall, the book was definitely a good solid 4-star for entertainment value. The one big, glaring downfall was the non-use of commas where there should be commas, mostly in conjunction with proper names. Maybe it’s a pet peeve that I make too much of, but it seems to be an across-the-board issue in Indie publications and for me, personally, is a huge distraction. My problem leans too far the other way, using commas where they are not needed!I think Ms. Preston’s pleasure in writing the book shown through and I would look forward to reading more of her work.*I received this book as a free copy from Story Cartel in return for an honest review.

In the book we meet Harris Tucker a retired tennis star and Laura Walters a mother of two who runs the accounts-and-promotions side of her family vineyard. Other characters you get to know are Harris’ Mum, Laura’s friend Cassie who has her own restaurant in town and of course the rest of Laura’s family.Harris is told by his accountant that he is living well outside his means and when he gets cut off financially his only option is to take a job as farm hand on Bollier Estates. Meanwhile Laura has moved back to the vineyard after her divorce so that she has the support of her family to help raise her children. Both Harris and Laura are at a point in their lives where they have to change otherwise they will lose themselves. As the story develops Harris and Laura get to know each other better. They not only learn from each other but they also slowly develop respect, friendship and eventually love. This is a sweet story with nice but complex characters. The author describes their personality traits well and also includes some humour making them honest and true to life. The story flows well and is nicely paced which means there are no boring bits, making it pleasant and easy to read. Details about the wine industry and the running of a vineyard were interesting and added a nice touch to the book.Overall this is an enjoyable relaxing read. If you like a romance novel that is well written, focuses on more than just the love story, has good well developed characters and is set in nice surrounds then you will enjoy this book.Review copy provided by Story Cartel in exchange for an honest review.

Things got even worse for him By Tony Parsons Harris Tucker (son, former tennis pro) was attending his mother’s Carolyn Tucker (62) gala event of candidacy for state senator, & to raise money for the Santa Barbara Children’s Hospital.Lindsay Harris G/F was the event coordinator.Harris had a reaction to his steroids & embarrassed not only his elf but the G/F & mom. They both disowned him immediately.Things got even worse for him, debts, nowhere to live, & lack of basic necessities.Down in his luck Harris takes a job as a farm hand working at the Bollier ranch. That family consists of: Mike Bollier (father/grandfather), Tom Bollier (brother/husband/father), Laura Jane Bollier (36+, UCLA, business, Vineyards, wine producer, nee Walters), Scott Bollier (17, son, Football), Luke Bollier (15, son, Baseball), Everett Bollier (son, musician), Teddy Bollier (brother, gay, MBA, Pepperdine), Bert Bollier, Wendy Bollier, & Armando Costa (Ranch manager).Sheila Bollier (divorced, mother/grandmother, sommelier) also makes her presence known.Laura & her ex-husband Alastair Walters have 2 children: Taylor Walters (12, son), & Tori Walters (8, daughter). It was Valentine’s Day & Harris Tucker (winemaker) was supposed to have a date with Cassandra Cassie Sanchez (Laura’s BFF). 2 of her waiter’s had called in sick so she was short of help.Laura was there to help & Harris agreed to help out also.Low & behold Lindsay (m) & Carolyn were dining there.Laura made a list of activities & events for the Bollier Estates opening day.The proceeds will help sponsor Operations for Orphans.Dirk Broady is the chef for the event.Philippe de Montparnasse (winery), Evan Gray (Domaine de Killorglin winery) & Howard Pike (Rustic Ridge winery) were all invited.Chrissy Samuels (TV reporter, Channel 7 news) was even there. What will happen between Laura & Harris?I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written delightful heart-warming romance book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. Something for you animal lovers. This could also make another great romance movie, or mini TV series (Masterpiece; PBS). A very easy rating of 5 stars.Thank you for the free Story Cartel; PDF bookTony Parsons MSW (Washburn)
