It doesn't have protein or fiber amounts, but it's nice for on the run, or figuring insulin for insulin:carb doses. I keep the regular size print in my purse, and the large size near my insulin and medication area.

I prefer having a paper copy of calorie counts, etc so I can browse through it before shopping. It seems easier than browsing online. This one also has color photos of the foods. It's a good book. I got the larger print and I like that.

By Meema of Eight A friend had loaned me her copy of an older version of this handy guide, and it helped me with deciding what foods were lower in carbs (even fast foods from restaurants), so without any hesitation, I purchased my own book... and I was delighted to find the latest version in a larger print.

Bright, ambitious Sophie Landgraf has landed a job as a Wall Street analyst. The small-town girl finally has her ticket to the American elite, but she doesn''t realize the toll it will take-on her boyfriend, on her family, and on her. It isn''t long before Sophie is floundering in this male-dominated world, and things are about to get worse. With the financial crisis looming, Sophie becomes embroiled in a multibillion-dollar merger that could make or break her career. The problem? Three men at the top of their game, each with very different reasons for advancing the merger. Now Sophie doesn''t know whom to trust-or how far she''ll go to get ahead. Set inside the high-stakes world of finance, Manhattan''s after-hours clubs, and factories in the Midwest and India, this is the high-powered, heartfelt story of a young woman finding her footing on Wall Street as it crumbles beneath her. Written by an industry veteran, Buying In tackles what it means to be a woman in a man''s world, and how to survive in big business without sacrificing who you are.

Buying In, by Laura Hemphill

From Publishers Weekly The world of high finance provides a thrilling setting for Hemphill's fine debut about survival in a cutthroat business where millions of dollars are at stake and the wrong comment can cost you your job. Sophie Landgraf, from smalltown Massachusetts, lands a lucrative Wall Street job out of college as an analyst for Sterling, while her college boyfriend struggles to make ends meet at an entry-level position at NPR. Sophie befriends a colleague, Vasu Mehta, who, after seven years on the job, is used to the grueling work but longs to spend more time with his family. Ethan Pearce, their department's managing director, is a brilliant, suave, and cold-hearted wheeler and dealer who throws Sophie for a loop by bringing her into a major merger of aluminum companies. She forges a genuine connection with one of the deal's main players, AlumiCorp CEO Jake Hutchinson, who worked his way up from the plant floor 23 years prior. The author, who paid her own dues at Lehman Brothers and other firms, clearly knows her way around Wall Street, but, more importantly, can make us care about her characters' successes and failures, against a formidable backdrop rife with competition, backstabbing, and soul-searching. Agent: Amanda Urban, ICM. (Nov.)

Review "The world of high finance provides a thrilling setting for Hemphill’s fine debut." —Publishers Weekly"I read Buying In in one sitting. It sucks you into an adrenaline vortex, obliterating everything but the deal. Work swallows family, friends, and scruples. A gripping and thought-provoking read." —Anne-Marie Slaughter, author of Why Women Still Can’t Have It All, is the Bert G. Kerstetter '66 University Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University and the former Director of Policy Planning, United States Department of State"With assured prose, a compulsively readable plot, and insider savvy, Buying In offers a front-row seat to the downfall of Wall Street, with a terrific young heroine who outmans the men without sacrificing her soul." —Ayelet Waldman, author of Red Hook Road, Love and Other Impossible Pursuits, Bad Mother and Daughter's Keeper"Laura Hemphill writes about Wall Street with the granular knowledge of an industry insider and the incisive empathy of an outsider. Buying In is an absorbing and affecting study of high finance and the toll it takes on one's non-capitalistic identity, with much to say about gender in the workplace, from a bright new literary talent." —Teddy Wayne, author of  The Love Song of Jonny Valentine and Kapitoil"Laura Hemphill deftly pulls off a hat trick, offering readers an insider’s clear-eyed take on the subprime lending crisis, a chilling look at the lives of women in banking, and a briskly entertaining coming of age story. You’ll be thinking about her complicated, conflicted heroine, Sophie Landgraf, long after you devour the novel’s final pages." —Joanna Smith Rakoff, author of A Fortunate Age"In Buying In, Laura Hemphill provides us a ringside seat in the inner boardrooms of Manhattan's investment banks in the months just before the financial crash. As her whip-smart, charmingly naïve protagonist Sophie attempts to navigate a deal that will make or break her career (and perhaps decide the future of the bank itself), you can't help but root for her to succeed even as you fear she will. Hemphill effortlessly lays bare the complicated machinations of the banking industry with the breathless pacing of a thriller, and with remarkable assurance describes the very real pull between family and career, success and sacrifice, loyalty and self-preservation. A stunning debut which is sure to catapult the author onto must-read lists." —Allison Amend, author of A Nearly Perfect Copy“Wall Street banker Laura Hemphill took her seven years laboring in the world of finance and spun them into a work of fiction that pulls back the door on life of the privileged elite.” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “Sophie’s not just leaning in; she’s buying in.” —BookPage “Former Wall Street financier Laura Hemphill pens a riveting novel about what it takes to make it in the world of finance, particularly as a young woman competing with the boys.” —Metro

About the Author Laura Hemphill graduated from Yale and spent seven years on Wall Street, where she worked at Lehman Brothers, Credit Suisse, and Dune Capital. This is her first novel.

Insider novel about the 2007 - 2008 bank crisis By Dave Parker The title of the opening chapter gives a strong hint of what's to come - October, 2007. Everyone over the age of 15 remembers the catastrophic sub-prime lending crisis and the big investment banks that failed, leading our country into a severe recession. In Buying In, recent Yale graduate Sophie Landgraf has landed her dream job - an analyst for Sterling, a major investment bank. She is well paid, and she envisions growing rapidly within the company.Sophie is responsible for modeling financial results from investments in order to help mid-level executives broker acquisitions and growth development for their clients. Her first big assignment is developing models for a potential merger between AlumiCorp and any of several other aluminum manufacturers in support of her group leader, Ethan Pearse's meeting with the AlumiCorp CEO.Buying In introduces the reader to the highly competitive, back-stabbing environment of investment banking through the interplay of ideas, secrets, and lies among all the major players. The goal of every senior manager is making deals and scoring fees - the bigger, the better - regardless of the eventual success of the client's acquisition. With multiple low- and mid-level analysts working for the same goal - making their superior look good, Sophie soon learns that this requires long hours, missed appointments, and broken relationships.Buying In starts slowly while building the background of the cultural environment of investment banking challenges and practices. As it progresses, the reader feels their interest growing as Sophie's personal relationship falls apart. The efforts and manipulations to find something - anything - that will close the AlumiCorp deal demonstrate the lack of ethics and even dishonesty pervasive in the banking industry.Buying In is very well written. It includes good details about the challenges of investing profitably. The reader cannot help but be drawn in as one model after another falls short and the AlumiCorp CEO turns them down. But the ending shows Sophie has learned how make it.

That said, it was interesting enough to keep me going since this book is set in a world I know pretty much nothing about. I am really glad that the heroine in this novel wasn't sitting around waiting to be rescued by her romantic interest. Sophie is a bit naive (in the beginning) and I'm a little surprised she lasted as long as she did in the cut throat world of Wall Street. She not only survives, but loves her job and the work she does. She realizes that she has to make decisions that are the best for her, not what everyone back home "thinks" is best for her. I like that. The book was solid, interesting, and I enjoyed it. There were some plotlines that stumped me, though. Sophie likes to snoop in people's offices and it just didn't fit the story. It was never really explained to my satisfaction and it seemed like a cheap way to try and reveal (very little) information about some of the other characters. That part could go away and I don't think the novel would suffer much for its loss. The rest could be kept. I liked that the people in the book are flawed without being neurotic to the point of being annoying.I'd be interested to see if the author writes a sequel or at least another book featuring Sophie. And I would check it out to see where Sophie lands next.

The heroine, Sophie Landgraf, lands a Wall Street analyst job (aka Excel slave) and throws herself into her new career with abandon pulling long nights, weekends and holidays, much to the dismay of her boyfriend and family. Her superior, Vasu, and Managing Director, Ethan, treat her like part of the furniture, never for a moment acknowledging her spreadsheets, expecting her to sacrifice any semblance of a personal life in service of the bank.Hemphill builds the story with a pending merger, giving us a front row seat to the players and the financial battle that must be won at all costs. I spent ten years at a venture capital firm in California so I really enjoyed how Hemphill handled the art of the deal and the toll it takes on everyone's values. The stakes are high. The game must be played. With the subprime crisis looming in the background, Vasu and Ethan are forced to manipulate the only pending merger on the bank's slate. Sophie is caught between their gigantic egos and unreasonable demands, yet she finds a way to connect with their client in a way that Vasu and Ethan would never dream possible.I can never get enough Wall Street thrillers, especially when a young, vulnerable, but highly intelligent woman like Sophie finds her way through the fall out.

Review

"Highly recommend this book...This story was truly inspiring and I loved it." —Night Owl Reviews, 5 Stars, Top Pick

About the Author

As a child, award-winning author Barbara Longley moved frequently, learning early on how to entertain herself with stories. Adulthood didn’t tame her peripatetic ways: she has lived on an Appalachian commune, taught on a Native American reservation, and traveled the country from coast to coast. After having children of her own, she decided to try staying put, choosing Minnesota as her home. By day, she puts her master’s degree in special education to use teaching elementary school. By night, she explores all things mythical, paranormal, and newsworthy, channeling what she learns into her writing. Barbara loves to hear from readers, and can be reached through her website: http://www.barbaralongley.com

Every once in a while a book comes along that truly touches my heart. For 2013 this is that book!!This is a book about a woman's struggle with PTSD. And not your typical wartime issues. This book made me really think about some of the issues women in the military face.I know that topic can sound dark and depressing but this book isn't either of those things. It is a book filled with love and hope and one great story.I encourage everyone to grab your copy now and I thank Ms. Longley for sharing such a wonderful story.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Love this! By RomanceWriter Oh, how I loved this story! It's worth way more than 5 stars, in my opinion. Sweet, funny, heartbreaking, frustrating, satisfying... yeah, it's all there. Not as much "steam" as in some of the other Perfect stories, but honestly, it would have been totally out of place here. Ted is just... well, "perfect". Cory broke my heart, and it was great to see some of our old favorites. I finished this book with a happy sigh of contentment.Well worth the money and time spent!!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing By Kktexas I enjoyed the first two books in the a Perfect series and was looking forward to this one with the unique perspective from a woman veteran. Ms Longley delved too much on the angst and then wrapped it up too quickly. The reality of PTSD and anguish from rape doesn't resolve after one therapy session and some pills. I am disappointed in how long it took to get to some semblance of a normal relationship and them how fast it took for them to be perfect.

Great, user-friendly reference guide to medications By Amazon Customer This book is a clear, user-friendly, well-organized reference book updated with DSM-V diagnoses and recent clinical research on current medications used for each diagnosis. It is a good reference for medical professionals as it has recommended labs, dosage information, black box warnings, etc. It is also clear enough and basic for allied mental health professionals such as psychologists, therapists, and social workers to enhance their understanding of the medications that their consumers may be on. Consumers likewise can easily look up the symptoms of their diagnoses as well as the risks, benefits, and side effects of their particular medications. The book is very well-organized and dense but much of the information is bulleted or bold so it is quick to scan and get the information you need.

Good Resource for Psychiatric Medications By Christine As an instructor for psychiatric nurse practitioner students, I recommend this book as a good clinical resource for students to review medication indications, dosing, contraindications, common side effects, black box warnings, tapering, and use of these medications in special populations. This book contains a very easy to follow format to review different classes of medications as well as OTC, Dietary, and Herbal supplements used in psychiatry. Branna Lind's self-esteem rests at the bottom of the Mississippi River. She canceled her "wedding of the decade," though she isn't saying why. She wants life on her own terms, no ready-made job in the family business, no safety net of close-knit kin, and no more betrayal. College professor James Newbern prizes his bachelorhood. Experience has taught him beautiful women are high-maintenance trouble and Branna fits that type. He is happy to avoid her until the college vice president assigns him to mentor the newest hire--Branna. Branna is on her way to a new life, but will the scars of the past send her running from love? Even if she stands her ground, can she convince James that she truly is his "type"?

Robinson A few mistakes that do not distract from the story, minor ones which is why I rated it a four, but otherwise it's a great story. I enjoyed reading it. Could have done without the sex and didn't know it had it until I was into the book, but still enjoyed the story and just skimmed over that part. The author spins a tale of a southern belle who moves to Florida to escape an old beau and learn to be on her own and live life the way she wants to. In the process, she meets the man she wants to marry and falls in love. Nails vivid description that sounds authentic to the areas described. Did an awesome job with characterization on the secretary. I could just visualize her. Also great characterization of a redneck farmer/college professor and loved how he had a GED and a PHD. I knew of someone else years ago who was a Dr. in college and taught history and who was in the same boat. You have to admire the person who accomplishes such a feat. Love the cover, too. Loved the description of the accident. Author of The Officer and the Belle and other novels

Has potential but fell flat By Steph Bayou Born had a lot of potential to be a really good book, but a whiny heroine and rushed, barely sensual sex scenes didn't draw me in. I started off thinking this might be a fun read w/ some cajun heat & a bit of danger. While there was a spark between Brenna & James, it was less lightning and more static electricity. There were opportunities for Ms. Joyce to capitalize on the suspense elements that she set up nicely, but unfortunately they just didn't go anywhere, which was really disappointing. I thought for sure some of them would culminate into an overall dramatic way, which could've made this a really excellent read. Overall, it's not truly a BAD book, just rather unexciting.

The setting was unique, the characters had Southern Charm, and it all fit together making a story that was easy to read yet very well done. The author did her homework regarding Southern traditions so the characters felt true to life. Some people think all romances are the same, but they are not. Each story much fit the characers and this one was a charmer.

Joanie Bigbee, cupcake baker extraordinaire, likes to keep her options open―and she’s good at it. She's started and sold some 30 businesses in her postage stamp-sized Tennessee town, and at the moment she can be found in a short skirt and go-go boots, selling cupcakes out of the back of a converted Volkswagen van. What she moves on to next is anybody’s guess. She knows better than to be tied down. In any way. She's watched every woman in her family fall head-over-heels, only to find themselves wondering how to pick up the pieces when love is lost.

When Nick Dalton shows up at the groovy cupcakery, all Joanie wants is a taste; a fling with no strings suits her just fine. But for Nick, a bite is not enough; he wants the whole cake: a big house, a family, true love. But love only makes you stupid, right? Joanie has to decide whether to follow where her free-spirit leads…or hold on to the sweetest thing she’s ever known.

Sweet Nothings (Sugar Springs), by Kim Law

About the Author Kim Law wrote her first story, “The Gigantic Talking Raisin,” in elementary school. Although it was never published, it was enough to whet her appetite for a career in writing. First, however, she would try her hand at a few other passions: baton twirling, softball, and music, to name a few. Voted Bookworm and Most Likely to Succeed in high school, she went on to earn a college degree in mathematics. Law spent years working as a computer programmer and raising her son, and she now devotes her time and energy to writing romance novels (none of which feature talking raisins). She is a past winner of the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart Award and currently serves as president for her local RWA chapter. A native of Kentucky, she lives with her husband in Middle Tennessee

By Kim Reviewed by Kimfor Read Your Writes Book ReviewsThe second book in Kim Law's Sugar Springs Series is a really sweet read. While this is the second book in the series, it stands alone from the first.Sweet Nothings will make you smile, laugh, and cry a little. It's a touching read about two people who had less than ideal childhoods finding the love they want so desperately.Nick Dalton, the twin brother of Cody Dalton from Sugar Springs, is a nurturer through and through. It's what he's done his whole life by taking care of his alcoholic mother. Nick doesn't want anything more than to find love and have a family of his own.Joanie Bigbee is not your average woman. She is her own person and pretty much does the unexpected quite often. Joanie suffers from abandonment issues. Her mother left her on her thirteenth birthday and several years later, her beloved grandfather left as well. With being hurt so many times, Joanie has refused to become involved in relationships. She doesn’t even make permanent commitments to the businesses she starts and then eventually sells. After convincing her to give him a chance, Nick slowly gets Joanie to open up and change as a person, for the better. Together, both Nick and Joanie make discoveries about themselves, those they love, and the past itself. This is a small town romance, so you have to know that the town as a whole is full of busybodies who like to meddle and gossip. But sometimes, those busybodies are just what a person needs to push them in the right direction. So much is packed into the pages of this book, from reunions to development of friendships, and love to heartbreak. I can’t wait to return back to Sugar Springs, Tennessee.Source: Montlake Romance via NetGalley

24 of 28 people found the following review helpful. easy read By Mary Helen Winkler I chase the book because it looked like a fast easy read which it is. The problem is that it completely unrealistic. It seems to have sex scenes every other page. If that is what you want, but I want more story.
