Branna Lind's self-esteem rests at the bottom of the Mississippi River. She canceled her "wedding of the decade," though she isn't saying why. She wants life on her own terms, no ready-made job in the family business, no safety net of close-knit kin, and no more betrayal. College professor James Newbern prizes his bachelorhood. Experience has taught him beautiful women are high-maintenance trouble and Branna fits that type. He is happy to avoid her until the college vice president assigns him to mentor the newest hire--Branna. Branna is on her way to a new life, but will the scars of the past send her running from love? Even if she stands her ground, can she convince James that she truly is his "type"?

Robinson A few mistakes that do not distract from the story, minor ones which is why I rated it a four, but otherwise it's a great story. I enjoyed reading it. Could have done without the sex and didn't know it had it until I was into the book, but still enjoyed the story and just skimmed over that part. The author spins a tale of a southern belle who moves to Florida to escape an old beau and learn to be on her own and live life the way she wants to. In the process, she meets the man she wants to marry and falls in love. Nails vivid description that sounds authentic to the areas described. Did an awesome job with characterization on the secretary. I could just visualize her. Also great characterization of a redneck farmer/college professor and loved how he had a GED and a PHD. I knew of someone else years ago who was a Dr. in college and taught history and who was in the same boat. You have to admire the person who accomplishes such a feat. Love the cover, too. Loved the description of the accident. Author of The Officer and the Belle and other novels

Has potential but fell flat By Steph Bayou Born had a lot of potential to be a really good book, but a whiny heroine and rushed, barely sensual sex scenes didn't draw me in. I started off thinking this might be a fun read w/ some cajun heat & a bit of danger. While there was a spark between Brenna & James, it was less lightning and more static electricity. There were opportunities for Ms. Joyce to capitalize on the suspense elements that she set up nicely, but unfortunately they just didn't go anywhere, which was really disappointing. I thought for sure some of them would culminate into an overall dramatic way, which could've made this a really excellent read. Overall, it's not truly a BAD book, just rather unexciting.

The setting was unique, the characters had Southern Charm, and it all fit together making a story that was easy to read yet very well done. The author did her homework regarding Southern traditions so the characters felt true to life. Some people think all romances are the same, but they are not. Each story much fit the characers and this one was a charmer.
