About the Author Bristol-born Linn B Halton lives in the small village of Lydbrook, which nestles on the edge of the Forest of Dean, in the UK. Humorous Story About Starting Over By iiiireader "A Cottage in the Country" is a lovely story about Maddie, a more mature woman, finding a way to start over again after having her life torn apart when she discovers the man she has been married to for most of her life has found a replacement for her. There's more to the story and that is part of the story, but suffice to say that Maddie has received quite a blow and has been reeling for a time when this story begins.It is also the story of Lewis, the local handyman, who has had his dreams dashed when Maddie moves to town but still finds a way to, rather grudgingly, give her a hand in settling down.While there is a romance in this story, the book is more about the emotions of coping with loss and learning to stand tall again. While sex is discussed, there are no actual sex scenes played out in the book which certainly did not detract at all from my enjoyment of the story. The author felt (rightly in my opinion) that the private moments were to be kept private.I loved the craziness of the story, between remodeling of an older house, the problems with Maddie's move and even her deliveries in the midst of a considerable weather issue. The author made the characters quite real to me, especially Maddie. I could understand her and relate to her quite well. That made reading the story a little like catching up with an old friend.There is a slight touch of the paranormal in the story, and while I don't generally read paranormal stories, I wish there had been a tad more of an explanation of a turn-around in Maddie near the end of the book. I think a page or two of more explanation would have helped me transition along with the character. It is a slight thing and not something that changed my overall opinion. It just took me a bit to make the connections needed.I enjoyed the book tremendously and will look forward to more books by this author in the future. By Jolliffe Anyone who has ever renovated property will recognise the disasters waiting to happen as Maddie finds her 'perfect' country cottage. This story is so much more than an escape to the country'; it's more an escape from life and after her recent betrayals, who can blame her? Traumatic change is difficult at any age but none more so, for a woman whose family has left the nest and who is let down by those whom she should expect loyalty and respect. I empathised with Maddie from the first page. This story is full of believable characters, vivid imagery and simmering passion; peppered with witty humour that is the perfect counterpoint to the Maddie's poignant journey of self-discovery.Maddie is an older heroine but despite her years, she is naive. It's this inherent vulnerability that appeals to the men in her life. Her sons want her to forgive their father, without knowing the full story, her boss and long time friend Ryan, wants her to experience life in the fast lane and Lewis wants her to go away. Unfortunately for his sense of self preservation, she gets under his skin and makes him want to protect her too. Maddie draws deep on her emotional resources in this story and proves to be the strongest of them all.'A Cottage in the Country', is a charming, heartfelt tale with a suitably romantic ending, which I loved, even though I was a little sad to say goodbye to Maddie and her dream cottage.I received a copy of this book from Harper Impulse via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Cottage in the Country by Linn B Halton By Nikki Bywater Maddie Brooks is delighted when she moves into her dream cottage. The cottage is the perfect place for her to begin her new life. The cottage needs a lot of work doing to it but Maddie can see the potential in the cottage to create a wonderful place for her to live and make the first step to the rest of her life.Lewis Hart has a strong connection to the cottage. He feels sad he misses out on the chance to buy it for himself. Lewis was very close to the previous owner Aggie and he also had plans for the cottage. He finds himself employed by Maddie to help undertake the renovation work on the house.Excited to begin her new life, Maddie moves in the cottage despite the mess and disruption while the repairs are been done. Things become even more difficult due to the work taking place over the Christmas holiday season and this and the winter causes more delays and complications to getting the cottage completed. Maddie soon gets use to having Lewis around and they become close, but when boundaries are crossed and confusion and communication cause more damage, will this be more complicated to fix and put back together than restoring the cottage?A beautiful book by author Linn B. Halton. A wonderful, warm and romantic read. I liked that Maddie is a strong leading lady who knows what she wants out of life and is no longer afraid of doing things for herself and embracing a new life with a positivity and enthusiastic energy, when it could be so easily a sad situation. The location where the story is set too provides the heart of a well told and emotional love story.
