Ellie is older, gruff and independent. She doesn’t expect much from life; it’s broken enough promises to her. The only ugliness in the world Ellie can truly clean up is the graffiti marring mailboxes in her neighborhood, and she centers her days around this as one of the few acts that gives her a little peace. When a fifteen-year-old Goth girl appears offering to help, Ellie is surprised—and suspicious. Sarah has been shunted from house to house in the foster care system. Now she’s run away from a forest camp managed by a tyrannical, enigmatic man.... But escape is not that easy, and soon Sarah finds her life in danger. Can Sarah and Ellie put aside their differences to keep truly horrific danger at bay? Jo Barney gives readers Hen Lit at its finest.

By M.A. Stanley In the beginning of this tale, the author introduces you to a great many characters: a broken old woman, the old woman’s son, a lost young runaway, a policeman with an autistic son (whose wife/mother left them), a young male prostitute (also a runaway) and a few other miscellaneous characters…but how do they all tie together?Ms. Barney weaves an intricate tale of desperation, loneliness, abuse and eventually salvation that takes the reader through the complicated, yet interwoven lives of several different people. There are struggles and horrors described in this novel that can be difficult to swallow, but unfortunately they are a reality in our society. Ms. Barney does an excellent job of building her characters (you love them, you hate them, you feel for them). I found this novel impossible to put down and when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it.I’ve read other books from this author, she has an uncanny knack of delving into emotional issues and portraying them vividly. I would highly recommend this story (spoiler: the author does not hold back on the horrors many of our runaway children and teenagers experience, so this is not for the faint of heart). This book was provided to me for free for an honest and unbiased review (see all our reviews at http://www.bookexplosions.com/ or on Goodreads at https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/131875-book-explosions )

A bit dark in places but brilliant By Pamela Scott I was given a free copy by the author in exchange for an honest review. The Runaway is a brilliant book. I cannot compliment it enough. The book has multiple narrators and the chapter alternate between the viewpoints of each one. I really enjoyed this and thought it worked really well. The chapter title states the character and year(s) so there’s no chance in getting confused. This structure helps to create a vivid picture of the past and present of each character and how the little narrative threads join together. The events connecting all of the characters are gradually revealed, compelling you to read on to see where the next dot connects. I thought all of the characters were well-written, almost painfully real, especially Sarah, Ellie and Jeff. The book ends up being a bit darker than I expected. I love it when authors surprise me. I had a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes several times. I also really loved the cover as well. It drew me.

Author looks at gritty side of life By Linda Thompson, Host of The Authors Show After reading the first few pages, I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into; so many different, yet important, characters to keep track of. And then there was the story itself about a down and out old woman and a troubled young girl. Once I figured out who was who, and how they all fit together, I couldn’t put this book down. Jo Barney is a masterful story teller, but like no other I’ve ever read. She creates scenes of the rough, raw and gritty side of life and weaves them into other scenes so touching they bring tears to your eyes. This is truly a masterful piece of fiction that I’m going to recommend to everyone I know. I’m looking forward to reading more of Barney’s works.

Family Love (The Love Brothers) (Volume 4), by Liz Crowe

About the Author Amazon best-selling author, mom of three, Realtor, beer blogger, brewery marketing expert, and soccer fan, Liz Crowe is a Kentucky native and graduate of the University of Louisville currently living in Ann Arbor. She has decades of experience in sales and fund raising, plus an eight-year stint as a three-continent, ex-pat trailing spouse. Her early forays into the publishing world led to a groundbreaking fiction hybrid, “Unconventional Romance. Worth the Risk,” which has gained thousands of fans and followers interested less in the “HEA” and more in the “WHA” (“What Happens After?”). With stories set in the not-so-common worlds of breweries, on the soccer pitch, in successful real estate offices and at times in exotic locales like Istanbul, Turkey, her books are unique and told with a fresh voice. The Liz Crowe backlist has something for any reader seeking complex storylines with humor and complete casts of characters that will delight, frustrate and linger in the imagination long after the book is finished. Don’t ever ask her for anything “like a Budweiser” or risk bodily injury.

This book is written in two parts, the first by Lindsay the mother and the second by Angelique the daughter. Just when you think Lindsay is a real bitch, the switch flips and you can totally identify with her struggles with family and life choices. Seeing the family and it’s drama through Angel’s eyes will make you evaluate your own sibling and parental relationships in life.I loved this book from start to finish. I became reacquainted with the Love brothers and the changes in their lives that have them turning into honorable men. Meeting Angel on a different level was enlightening, heartbreaking and endearing in equal measure. If you like a book with the “feels”, this is the book for you.

Talk about having a book hangover on its way! I've been a fan of this series but didn't expect anything as emotional as what was delivered in Family Love. The feels it brought out, the tears that were pulled from me and the heartache I felt. Liz Crowe delivered something much more intense than I could have imagined. To see the relationship between Lindsey and Anton spark and flourish as young adults from different cultures and lifestyles was a huge treat for me. Sure we meet them throughout the the stories for each of the Love brothers, but to see them fall in love and and battle the hurdles that plague most young couples, when it comes to married life, children and money struggles gave me such a new perspective and an understanding of who they are and why they were the way they were with their children.Aside from seeing the start of a legacy that is the Love Family, we see their only daughter, and youngest of the brood, Angelique as she struggles with finding herself. Her strained relationship with her mother is only just the tip of the iceberg for this girl. She bounces from bad decision to bad decision throughout her life as some sort of way to prove she can do it on her own. Her desire to stay as far away from her mother and the family drama keeps her distant from the family over a stretch of years but health scares, and family secrets keep pulling her back into the fold no matter how resistant she is to it all. Her family loyalty and obligations are even stronger than her stubbornness.I have to say, there were moments that I actually fought back the urge to just put my kindle down and BOO HOO. It was those small shared family moments that really pulled at my heart strings. Family Love isn't just a story about romance; it's a story about family, sibling bonds, and the love a parent has for a child.Bravo, Liz Crowe! I can't wait to see what's next for this amazing family.*a copy was provided in exchange for an honest review

As with the entire series, it's an emotional roller coaster ride. A good one. You get real life drama: love, hurt, misunderstandings, struggles, oh yeah and sex. A page turner I couldn't put down. This is Lindsay and Anton's story. Angelique, their daughter, is the second half. From her point of view with their mother-daughter conflict. It's a real-life romance. How love grows from the very beginning of a relationship to, after many years, the couple is still in love, battle scars, trophies and all. For a book to cause me to seek out the Kleenex box says a lot - I don't get emotional reading. But Liz Crowe does that to you. Brava! Wonderful job - again!

My favorite movie is Peggy Sue Got Married, so when I read the description of this book, I could not wait to read it. I was not disappointed! I loved it! I would LOVE to be able to go back in time armed with the knowledge I have gained thus far. I think more than anything, I would appreciate the times and the people from the past…cherish them. I don’t think I’d really change anything – I would just enjoy it more.At age 38, Ramie Phillips is has led a very successful life - but even though she enjoys all the luxuries she ever dreamed of having, she realizes that she isn’t really happy. On a boat outing with friends, she goes to the diving board and dives off – only to be woken by her mother’s voice calling to her to get out of bed and get ready for school. Huh? What’s going on? How did she get here?Ramie discovers that it’s the eve of her eighteenth birthday. Oh the opportunities! What would she change? Would she get married…have kids? What about her dad’s death as the result of smoking. Could she do anything to change his outcome? So what will this 38-year-old do in her 18-year-old existence?I think that maybe all of us at some time or another have wished to be able to go back in time and do something over again, see lost friends or relatives, not make the same mistakes…Some of us would like to change things. The thing that this book makes you think about is the long term effects of what those changes would mean. How would they really impact the rest of your life, as well as those around you? It’s definitely something to ponder – and I admit that I really have been since reading this book. It makes you look at things from a different perspective – VERY thought provoking!Beth Harbison has grabbed my heart with this story. She made me realize that the bad things that we survive, shapes who we become – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It also made me look at my life and start appreciating every day that I am given. Yep, that’s pretty profound! Thank you for that, Ms. Harbison! For me, IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME was a magical experience. My take-aways were:1) A story doesn't have to be about a big, sweeping tragedy or event to make it worthwhile. It can be about a series of small events that resonate with your life and cause you to think.3) A touch of magical realism never hurts anything and generally helps.4) We believe what we choose to believe.5) Visiting with old friends, even old friends who need a good lecture, is always a welcome thing.6) Sometimes, all it takes to get you out of a reading slump is one fantastically engaging book. This is it!I highly recommend this wonderful story. It will change you. All of us are different, so it will affect us in different ways – but good ones. It made me cry happy tears. That is always a good thing.*An advance reading copy was generously provided by the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. if you loved the movie About Time... By AmandaNicole.Books To the point: This is a lot of fun for lovers of the movies About Time (Rachel McAdams) and 13 Going on 30 (Jennifer Garner). I loved the book myself and thought it was a perfect time for me to read it.Review: Okay so let’s just be upfront. I have a lot going on in my life. A lot of mistakes were made in my medical history by insignificant doctor’s that ultimately led me to where I am now. I am struggling with a difficult situation and often find myself taking what I do have for granted due to my suffering. If you read my review on What Alive Forgot by Line Moriarty you probably know that book had a profound affect on me. It reminded me to take the opportunity to appreciate things as they are and really take advantage of the ability to be happy ever day that I have. This book ultimately had the same effect, though it is quite a different story. The time travel sense of this book is science fiction but the lessons are the same. If you had the ability to change the past would it actually be beneficial. It had me thinking that if I could go back and save my health would I still have my children. What these kind of books are really saying is, you can’t save the good and get rid of the bad. The bad stuff you go through really shapes who you are and how you appreciate the good things you have. This book was written really well, it is easy to follow, easy to understand but still very imaginative. I appreciate an author who can inspire my intelligence without getting lost. I definitely think this is a book for most people to put on the top of their TBR’s. It’s a feel good story, and you’ll take a different perspective on your life away from the story.Review from www.amandanicolebooks.wordpress.com

It was overly dramatic with short phrases that were frustrating to read. I didn't know where the author was going with the story or what the point was. The ending was good and did clarify everything but it was frustrating to get to the end. Driving with the Top Down and Shoe Addicts Anonymous are much better reads.

In a matter of two days the quiet lonely life of Hannah Jacobs makes a complete turnaround. She is stunned when she sees none other than Ezekiel Melancon along with his brother Budrow unloading a rental truck at the house next door. Patricia Melancon or Miss Mel as she is known to many in the City of Seaside, California, and her daughter Shantrell are Hannah’s new neighbors. Hannah has a great deal of respect and admiration for Miss Mel and Zeke Melancon but little regard for Shantrell and the womanizing Budrow. The day following the arrival of Hannah’s new neighbors, fate lays a cruel circumstance at her door in the form of an unexpected visit from her tempestuous cousin Dana who she has not seen in two years. After a five day visit from Dana, the Melancon family becomes essential to Hannah’s daily life. She finds herself instantly drawn to Zeke Melancon but not surprisingly Budrow is the first to make a play. The entire Melancon family undergird the hard working Hannah and help her navigate crisis after crisis. Hannah’s close knit neighbors provide her with both protection and sage advice. As she learns that her assumptions about the Melancons were misguided, she develops strong feelings for each member of the family, especially one of the Melancon brothers.

This was the perfect day for a good book. It was rainy outside and slightly cold. I curled up on the couch wanting for a lazy day and started reading. I could not put the book down as I anticipated what was to happen next. I usually read legal thriller/action/spy novels. But now I may have to declare that I am intrigued with a good romance. The characters were believable. I story was believable and good. I not only picture the characters and place in my mind but I felt so connected with reminders of my own family and friends. Drama, romance, gossip, jealousy, ambition, and low-life trashiness made a great story. I enjoyed the previous books by Cinda Brea but none pulled me in quite like this one. I read it in one day!!

Alone in the world, Erica Wheeler needed a job or face eviction. The aspiring actress harbored a lifelong dream of movie stardom. She knew she had the talent, all she needed was a chance. Her roommate, Amy, plotted revenge on her former boss, sexy, bad-boy producer, Gunther Quill, for firing her. Together she and Erica bent the truth like a pretzel to get her a job working for Quill. He surprised her. Was he the same meanie Amy described or was he simply a smart, ambitious man on his way to the top? One thing Gunther Quill hated was a liar. Tough, seductive and brilliant, he prided himself on being truthful. With his sharp, new assistant, Erica Wheeler, he’d soon be the most powerful producer of musicals in Hollywood and on Broadway. I MUST go back and read the rest! With no 'background' on either Gunther or Erica, I enjoyed the book as a stand alone. I felt for Erica, needing to lie about her aspirations to get a job and keep a roof over her head, and I also felt for Gunther, because he absolutely doesn't want anyone to lie to him. I understood when he was sarcastic, with a biting wit at times, since this was a defense mechanism for him. We never truly get over our childhoods and both Gunther and Erica have issues with family.Working with each other, helping, and uplifting each other, Gunther and Erica become involved. They both are not sure what love is although they are moving quickly towards HEA when the lies begin to surface and trust is destroyed. Working out issues between themselves and their families brings them together. Truth wins...always.I gave this 4 stars because there were a few times when Gunther was spelled Gunter and words were run together. The words running together may have been formatting errors, but misspelling the main characters name just takes away from the story for me.

By Sassy Beta Reading & Review Jean has done the near impossible.....she made me care for Gunther....even more than that, she made me CRY for Gunter...and I don't mean a few lil tears, I mean heart breaking sobs! I have never liked Gunther, thought he was a pervy, self centered, butt head, but what did Jean do....yep..she made him into a hero! We get more back ground on what makes Gunther tick (but had a few hints in previous books) but it wasn't enough to change my mind at the time. But now, well I am gob smacked, flabbergasted, flummoxed, befuddled and feel bamboozled! I LOVE IT!! Great Job Jean...you have done the unthinkable, the unobtainable, the unbelievable...made me care for Gunther. Then we have sweet lil Erica who ticked me off for using my sweet Gunther the way she did!! Granted Amy had a big role to play in that at the beginning. Okay yea, Erica always saw the good in Gunther...didn't let his bad boy reputation dictate her feelings for him. And yea, she ended up hurt as well for a while, but all I can say is thank goodness they all worked it out in the end. So yes, we do have a HEA.This is a multi pov. I could have used a wee bit more of Gunther but all in all, this was fantastic. Thank goodness too because this more than makes up for the disappointment I had from book 5 which was okay but in my opinion my least favorite in the series. So would I recommend this book? When Gunther made an appearance in the earlier books, I did not like him at all, but now I do. I loved that Gunther was a sweatheart to Erica, but not to Amy.Erica is so sweet and caring. She did not allow Gunther to get away with anything. Plus she did not give into him. Erica and Gunther had a great chemistry and a sweet romance. Did Gunther get what Amy and Erica had planned to do or did he end up with Erica? Read this book. I know it is a stand a lone book, but I think for you to completely understand all of the other issues with Gunther, reading 1-5 would help that. I keep thinking did we know the real Gunther in the other books. Some of the times we would read about him after he hurt another female. Maybe a jealous female, who did not get what she wanted or did he truly do something awful. During this book, I saw Gunther in new eyes. I do believe he did not find the perfect person to spend his life with until he met Erica. They were perfectly matched.I loved this book so much. I am not sure if I can pick a favorite book out of the Hollywood Hearts series. Each one offered something different.☆☆☆☆☆I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.Would I recommend this book? Yes! Author? Yes!Would I read more from this author? Yes!Happy Reading!Melissa

In the Blue Ridge Mountains lies a town named Valle Crucis, or “Vale of the Cross,” its defining feature being a trio of rivers that intersect in the shape of an archbishop cross. It’s the home of three sisters, members of the ancient Crawford family. Mary, the youngest, owns a Bengal cattery called “Jungle Critters;” Alice, the middle child, owns a Christmas tree farm with Uncle Travis; and Sarah, the eldest, owns an adventurous heart, but mostly tries to avoid her sisters, who sabotage each other every chance they get. When their mother Esther Leigh passes away, they learn about a secret, multi-million dollar inheritance. While Alice and Mary bicker over the division of the money, Sarah investigates the source of her mother’s impossibly large fortune. She learns of a family, the Winstons, and how her mother mysteriously wronged them in the past… Of course, any story about an inheritance needs Russian spies, deep-woods cultists, fertilizer thieves, and cats floating upside-down in space stations. Can Sarah right her mother’s wrongs before her sisters tear the family apart?
