And I like ALL of those things it could be!First off, I don't know why this popped into my head when I was reading it but I thought that if you took out all of the modern-type references, this could be a Historical Romance! Maybe it was the cover art on the book or maybe it was the references to contracts and reputations. I don't know and it's probably just my own twisted brain getting in the way. But I really liked it. It has all the things that I love about Contemporary Romance (cell phones, women with careers, hot water, indoor plumbing) but for me, it still had a Historical kind of feel to it. Whatever, on to the juicy bits!Carly Mitchell is seriously a chick that has it all figured out. Well, compared to ME she does! She's got an amazing career as an Interior Designer, she's got a great wardrobe (no easy feat), great friends and a pretty great fiancee. Umm, until she catches her fiancee cheating on her with his secretary (of course!). We don't get a lot of info about the bastard fiancee but it doesn't matter because he's a means to an end. Later, when Carly sees him approaching at a party, she wants to save face but also wants to avoid talking to him so she does what any sensible woman does: she kisses the closest guy she can grab! LOL! Ok, well, it wasn't EXACTLY like that but she DID want to piss her ex-fiancee off and there would be no better way than to be "caught" making out with notorious playboy, Alex St. Jones. See? That's what I like about Carly! She sees a problem and figures out a solution. Boom, done. She's strong and practical and that's pretty great. But she also doesn't take crap from people either. I guess, for me, Carly is pretty much an ideal heroine. She's got all the good things and just a dash of vulnerability, which makes her very likeable.Alex St. Jones on the other hand is the ideal playboy. Uses women as he pleases and them leaves them. He comes from family money but has made his own fortune in the architecture business he formed with his friends. He's so much fun to HATE when we first get to know him! Carly's brilliant idea to avoid her ex ends up costing Alex millions of dollars since Carly's ex had just signed this huge agreement with Alex's firm. Needless to say, the deal is off and Alex feels that Carly owes him something for his troubles. See??? Isn't he such a bastard?!?! LOL! He draws up this contract and Carly agrees to it. Maybe this would never happen in the real world but come on, Carly kinda digs this guy so why the hell not? I don't want to go any further into the details but you see what kind of guy Alex is, right? Not much to like. No, really... I really didn't like him. At all. But then you start to see little bits and pieces of why Alex is the way he is and it makes a little more sense, but more importantly, I found myself not hating him!! And then, I found myself liking him!! The author was absolutely toying with my emotions aaaand I think I like it! LOL!Throughout the book, the POV switches back and forth between Carly and Alex. Now, I don't know how the author did it but I found myself sort of rooting for whoever's POV it was at the time. Like, when it was Carly's POV, I totally got where she was coming from and I was all kinds of Team Carly. But then, when it was Alex's POV, I was thinking that Carly was unreasonable and Alex had the right of things. Usually, that's not how it works for me. I find the character that I like and that's who I root for. Not so with this one. The author is devious and it's just not fair! LOL! Something else that was unusual was how NOT formulaic this novel was (look at my big words!). I mean, we all know the usual way that romance novels go. This one made a couple of route deviations along the way and I was pleasantly surprised! You think you're about to either get your HEA way too early or some terrible tragedy is about to occur but then you're going off literally to a place you didn't anticipate. And then you think that the novel is winding down and that you're about to get Alex proposing to Carly somehow and Boom! Another thing comes up! I mean, I think it was at least twice that I was thinking, "Well, this is going to be a shorter book than I thought and I hadn't realized that this was a novella but it was pretty good..." and then Alex does something surprising or Carly reveals a detail that I did NOT see coming and it's another emotional hurdle that these to have to get over together.Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I think that the cover art might be a little misleading since Alex looks like he's from 1800's England but then Carly looks more modern, but that's just me being nitpicky since I couldn't find much to not like about this book. Oh, the first couple of chapters were a little confusing for me. I couldn't tell if we were reading a flashback or if things were happening out of order. Its only the first couple of chapters and it's evident pretty quickly what's going on. One other thing I liked: the author has put in these little faux snippets from a celebrity watcher show and I thought that was really clever and neat. Not that I would ever watch one of those shows.... ;)I would recommend this book to anyone who likes naughty playboys! I might even recommend this to someone who normally reads Historical Romances because I still stick by my guns and say that this occasionally feel like it has some historical sensibilities to it, even though I can't put my finger on it. And no, it's not just the cover!!! LOL! Either way, this is a fun read that has plenty of surprises. I can't wait to see what the author has for us next!More of my reviews:[...]

Phan I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Playboy's Love Affair by author Emily Quinn and it's incredible that this is her debut book. The beginning of the story had a bit of mystery that captures your attention and you find yourself wanting to keep on reading to see what's happening.Alex St. Jones is the all-around playboy who lives by his one rule which is to enchant, seduce and leave the woman before it gets serious. He refuses to have anything to do with marriage. Little does he know, he will meet his match and the woman that will change everything.Carly Mitchell is a successful interior designer who mysteriously appears in Alex's life one dark night and demands he kiss her. His reaction to her demand was priceless and I couldn't stop chuckling throughout this scene. I really enjoyed how strong this heroine is and how she is not afraid to speak her mind or act on her feelings.Alex and Carly's relationship is a rocky one, to say the least. Carly's impulsive kiss has serious consequences for Alex and his business so he retaliates by binding her to a six month contract where she is at his "beckon call." Sounds familiar to all you Pretty Woman fans?Carly does not take this lightly and she fights him almost every step of the way.I loved the bantering between Alex and Carly in this story and the author did a terrific job writing the dialogue in this book which seemed true-to-life. I could so picture someone speaking these words in real life and the drama and angst that went along with it. I admit I enjoyed Carly bringing Alex's ego down a notch or two, LOL. They were a perfect match for each other because neither overpowered one another; they both gave as good as they got in and out of the bedroom. The sex scenes were well-written and had just the right amount of heat to leave the reader satisfied.I really enjoyed the different elements in this story such as the love/hate relationship Alex had with this parents, the friendship that Alex and Carly had with married couple Paul and Kiera, Alex's jealousy of Carly's best friend, Jay and the humor of the gossip columnist's announcements about the infamous bachelor Alex. I hooted with laughter each time and they were well-placed and flowed with the story. I would recommend this wonderful story and fresh new voice to romance readers.

By Amy Valentini A PLAYBOY'S LOVE AFFAIR by Emily Quinn is a fun, fast-paced, delightfully romantic love story born out of a stolen kiss and ending with a happily-ever-after that will have you smiling. And if you're like me, eagerly looking forward to what might come from this debut author since we're left with a hint of a clue. I will admit that I've seen better covers but as the old saying says, don't judge a book by its cover - the cover on this book is deceiving. On the cover, our hero has an innocent, elegant look to him and the heroine a stylish yet coy and demure air about her, but the hero of this story is nothing close to innocent. Alex knows style and elegance, but is most certainly endearingly down to earth. The heroine, although stylish and fashionable, is far from coy or demure, but instead is bold, confident, and feisty enough to keep our her playboy tantalized until he can no longer think of life without her. Secondary characters in the form of friends and enemies push this story through its paces leaving you always wondering if their friends might have something more up their sleeves. I adore their friends.I very much recommend this lovely, fun debut novel, A PLAYBOY'S LOVE AFFAIR by Emily Quinn to anyone who loves a romance born from conflict, that fires with passion fueled by tension, and comes together in a sighingly sweet happily-ever-after that leaves you smiling with that 'Ahhhh, that's cute' ending. I'm looking forward to reading more from this fresh new author.***eARC provided by author in exchange for an honest and unscripted review.

Do you remember your first love? Meagan will never forget hers because he held an important role in her life that should have prevented them from coming together as one. There were so many reasons for her and William not to be together, such as their 21 years age difference just to name one. Tragedy took the lives of those who would stand in their way and Megan was happy that it did…at first. It was those same people, may they rest in peace that taught her the deadly game that provided her the keys to open Pandora’s Box at an early age, which sent her into William’s arms. It was his constant cheating and physical abuse that would send her into the arms of many others. Now that she’s unhappily married, she searches for love through cougar’s eyes and thinks she may have found it in Devin, a man young enough to be her own child by the rules or lack thereof, of the south, but her husband’s sneaky moves are standing in the way. It takes her limousine driver, Angelo, to open her eyes to the immediate danger that she is in. He accidentally stumbles across a past that neither of them knew about or are ready to acknowledge. With a history that is filled with lies, murder, and constant disrespect all parties seem to be tied in together in ways they never imagined possible. Raynesha Pittman returns with another dram-filled page turner By Mrs. Simpson 923 It comes as no surprise to anyone who has seen my list of read books on Goodreads that I am a huge fan of Raynesha Pittman because I love drama and suspense. As a fan of urban fiction , I first was introduced to Pittman's work when I purchased Kismet: Beyond the Bedroom Series to read during my 2013 book challenge. Although I was hooked from her first book, Kismet 2 and Dog Food solidified her as an author for which I anxiously waited for her new book. That new book is Disrespectfully Yours!Throughout this book I've had my emotions toyed with, but in a good way. Overall this book was intoxicating, suspenseful and drama-filled which kept me turning page after page after page. Meagan is a successful owner of a modeling agency in Georgia. She is married to the much older owner of Georgia Peach restaurants. Although she has been married for well over 15 years, Meagan is unhappy and searching for love in all the wrong places. From the protagonist Meagan and her husband, the much older restaurateur, to her lovers, each of these well-developed characters leap off the page. I highly recommend this book!

The title and cover would lead you to believe that this books is fulll of young and disrespect teenagers or young adults. Oh contraire mon frere, this book is full of grown a$$ adults who have definitely been properly raise but allowed their selfishness destroy their life and the lives of those around them.Raynesha Pittman is back at it again with her real and vivid brand of story telling wrapped up in suspense. Her knack for drawing her audience in puts her at the top of her game...all the while she's still growing. The growth in her writing is obvious. Often she is categorized as a hood writer but this book truly shows she can bring the story to life without a dope dealer as a character.Disrespectfully Yours completely lives up to its title with every character. Just as you think you know who did the killing and scheming, Mrs. Pittman throws you for another loop.Forget reality tv....this is reality reading!!!

Well if you happen to be married you take apples and make applesauce. William is a man with goals and dreams to make it in this world by hook or crook. Meagan is a girl looking to be loved by a crush she's wanted all her life. Devin is an aspiring rapper infatuated with a married man's wife. When all of their world's collide you just can't call this a fiasco, it is plain disrespectful.Raynesha Pittman shocked me real good with this perfect blend of contemporary and ratchet drama. The story flowed keeping my attention with an ending I really wasn't expecting at all from an odd point of view. By the end I wasn't sure who I was supposed to be rooting for or talking bad about. It's not often I read original stand alone books yet this novel was well worth the time it took for me to finish and would gladly recommend it to anyone looking for something fresh in urban fiction.

The "Washington Pos"t and "USA Today" Bestseller""I might be Cinderella today, but I dread who they'll think I am tomorrow. I guess it depends on what I do next."" American Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister, Lacey, has always been the romantic who fantasized about glamour and royalty, fame and fortune. Yet it's Bex who seeks adventure at Oxford and finds herself living down the hall from Prince Nicholas, Great Britain's future king. And when Bex can't resist falling for Nick, the person behind the prince, it propels her into a world she did not expect to inhabit, under a spotlight she is not prepared to face. Dating Nick immerses Bex in ritzy society, dazzling ski trips, and dinners at Kensington Palace with him and his charming, troublesome brother, Freddie. But the relationship also comes with unimaginable baggage: hysterical tabloids, Nick's sparkling and far more suitable ex-girlfriends, and a royal family whose private life is much thornier and more tragic than anyone on the outside knows. The pressures are almost too much to bear, as Bex struggles to reconcile the man she loves with the monarch he's fated to become. Which is how she gets into trouble. Now, on the eve of the wedding of the century, Bex is faced with whether everything she's sacrificed for love-her career, her home, her family, maybe even herself-will have been for nothing.

Review "Smart, funny . . . [Cocks and Morgan] write like the pros they've become."―Janet Maslin, The New York Times"The characters should all be familiar: the heir to the British throne, his mischievous younger brother, his granny and the pretty commoner he meets in college. But in this version by bloggers Cocks and Morgan (a.k.a. the Fug Girls), the girl is American. Nick and Bex's love story is so fun and dishy, you'll hope for a sequel--with royal babies."―People"In the grand tradition of Curtis Sittenfeld's American Wife . . . A breezy, juicy novel that's like The Princess Diaries with fewer made-up countries and more sex-the kind of book you can imagine Pippa sneaking into Kensington Palace."―Entertainment Weekly"Hysterical."―Entertainment Weekly, "The Must List""Every bit as engrossing as the real Kate and Will. . . . The pages turn as easily as a tabloid feature on the royal couple-and you'll end up just as obsessed with Bex and Nick as you already are with Wills and Kate."―Glamour"Cute, well-written, and perfect for summer. . . . I loved it."―Buzzfeed, "29 Books You Should Definitely Bring to the Beach This Summer""The authors hit all the right notes in this funny, smart, emotional tale that will definitely appeal to fans of Jojo Moyes."―Library Journal (Starred Review)"An entertaining read-but also a sharp critique of how we treat celebrities and what happens to people always in the paparazzi glare . . . Cocks and Morgan also know that daydreams should stay daydreams because the reality is much harsher. That's what elevates The Royal We from just a good beach book to a beach book with a message--while remaining entertaining enough to keep your butt in your beach chair."―Philadelphia Inquirer"The perfect summer read . . . a confection of a tale, but a satisfying one, a romantic romp carried by Cocks and Morgan's storytelling."―Metro (Canada)"Pages of biting humor and breathtaking glamour rewrite a fairy tale into something more satisfying than a stack of tabloids."―Kirkus"A joy from start to finish. THE ROYAL WE is that rare novel that makes you think, makes you cry, and is such fun to read that you'll want to clear your schedule until you've turned the final page. But be warned--Cocks and Morgan have created a world so rich, a romance so compelling, and characters so funny and alive, that you'll be terribly sad to see them go."―J. Courtney Sullivan, New York Times bestselling author of The Engagements and Maine"THE ROYAL WE is full of love and humor, and delicious in too many ways to mention in one little blurb. I read this novel as quickly as I could, relishing any few minutes I had to turn back to its pages. An absolute delight."―Emma Straub, New York Times-bestselling author of The Vacationers"A heartfelt exploration of a life lived in the spotlight, THE ROYAL WE balances dishy decadence with an honest look at the sacrifices required to stay princess to Prince Charming."―Courtney Maum, author of I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You"THE ROYAL WE is as engrossing and deeply satisfying as any royal wedding documentary, and it's a thousand times more fun, from the fairy tale to the inevitable foibles. You will want Bex Porter to be your best friend. You will feel the same way about Cocks and Morgan, who are warm, witty, hilarious, and moving in their depiction of a very complicated relationship indeed."―Jen Doll, author of Save the Date "Readers should prepare to lose their hearts to THE ROYAL WE, a loving satire that is scandalously funny and wonderfully romantic." ―-Bookpage "Underneath the frothy exterior is sharp look at the clash between modern women and the ways they are portrayed. It's not a fairy tale, but that doesn't mean it's not a great story." ― -The Millions "Cocks and Morgan tackled their first dip into mainstream fiction for adults and nailed it. THE ROYAL WE is a wonderful tale of young love, peppered with animated characters, difficult hardships, and selfdiscovery." ― -RT Book Reviews "Cute, well-written, and perfect for summer . . . I loved it." ― -Buzzfeed.com "The authors hit all the right notes in this funny, smart, emotional tale." ―-Library Journal, starred review

About the Author Heather Cocks is Texas-born and England-raised, yet somehow ended up with no fun accent. But she did come out of it all with an immense love of meat and potatoes, a healthy respect for Joan Collins, and a talent for playing the recorder, so that helps.

By schmettajames The Royal We is the perfect book for people who are interested in the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, but find William and Kate maybe just a little dull. It's written by Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks, the team behind Go Fug Yourself, the popular celebrity fashion blog. Their site covers Kate and other royals quite a bit, so their interest in the subject is well known. The Royal We reimagines the love story of William and Kate as that of Prince Nicholas of Wales and an American named Bex (short for Rebecca) Porter. Their story parallels that of William and Kate, but with loads more drama and angst added in. Bex leaves Cornell to spend a year at Oxford, where she ends up living on Prince Nicholas' hall. She doesn't realize who he is when she first meets him, and she's soon accepted into his inner circle when the prince and his friends realize that she's not desperate for a piece of Nick (unlike most of the student population of Oxford). It's not a romance at first, and Bex is busy hooking up with Nick's friend. But the pair end up bonding over a shared love of terrible TV, and she introduces him to the awesomely ludicrous Devour, a supernatural soap opera that surely bears some resemblance to the late lamented soap Passions (which is occasionally referenced on Go Fug Yourself, so I assume the authors are fans). It's not much of a spoiler to tell you that Nick and Bex fall in love.Once Nick and Bex leave Oxford, the drama really kicks into high gear and they have to deal with her attention-grubbing twin sister Lacey, his lovable scamp of a brother Prince Har... Freddie, trying to keep the relationship a secret to avoid press attention, and Nick's seriously messed up family. There are all sorts of soapy twists, and although the reader knows from the prologue that that couple end up engaged, there's definitely some doubt about whether they'll actually make it to the altar. Bex is a fun heroine, and she doesn't have an easy time, as she faces disapproval from just about everyone. She's looked down on because her father made his fortune by inventing a sofa that's also a mini-fridge (it's called the Coucherator, and if this doesn't already exist, someone should get on it).I enjoyed the first part of the book the most; the story of Bex and NIck meeting at Oxford and falling in love was very sweet. The rest of the book was good, although I did feel that it dragged a bit in the middle and perhaps that section could have been shorter. Despite this complaint, I thought the book was a lot of fun and I think royal watchers will really like it.

By Inspiring Insomnia The Royal We might not be the Prince William/Kate Middleton fan fiction we wanted, but it’s the Prince William/Kate Middleton fan fiction we got. Let’s be honest. William and Kate aren’t the most exciting couple in the world. They’re very attractive, they’re very well-mannered and composed, they’re probably wonderful parents, and while that’s great for real life, it doesn’t make for a juicy novel. This lack of juiciness is especially surprising since this book was written by the bloggers from Go Fug Yourself.William and Kate are played here by Nick and Bex. Instead of being an upper-middle class British girl, Bex is an upper-middle class American girl. Oh, the horror! Bex goes to Oxford as an exchange student, and Prince Nicholas is the first fellow student she meets. He greets her, he shows her around, and get this – Bex HAS NO IDEA WHO HE IS. Now, come on. Is there any American college girl, even one who only has a passing knowledge of the British monarchy, who would take the time to investigate the Oxford student exchange program, move to England, but then have no clue that the heir to the throne was one of her classmates?Let’s get back to Kate Middleton for a minute. One of the things the gossip-loving, Daily Mail-reading part of me loves is that she and her grasping family supposedly conspired for years to get her claws into William and to raise their own social status by association. Who cares if it’s true or not, because it would make for a delicious novel. But none of this royal stuff even phases Bex, and this makes her attraction for Nick baffling, because his main characteristic is his constant moping. He complains about his duties and responsibilities and his family. He doesn’t trust anyone. He can’t have fun, because it might get into the tabloids. So, since we are constantly told that Bex has no interest in Nick’s royal status, why does she want to have anything to do with this buzzkill of a guy? Later on, when someone points out that Bex could become queen, Bex is shocked. Shocked, I say! She’d never even thought of that!Since it became clear early on that Bex was going to be an angelic character with the purest of intentions, all that was left was to enjoy a purely fictional look into the inner workings of the monarchy and how they must attempt to groom this American girl to be a princess. New clothes! Hair extensions! And keep that Pippa-ish sister of yours in line. Bex’s sister, by the way, is awful, and she seemed designed to take on all of the negative qualities that have been ascribed to Kate and her family. Also awful? Nick’s father, who seems to hate both of his sons. For you Harry fans (and you can count me as one), he is here in all his glory as Freddie. The queen is a heavy and somewhat frightening presence throughout the story, but she’s rarely seen or heard by Bex, which seems right. She’s got better things to do than to socialize with her grandson’s American girlfriend. And now, the authors were faced with a dilemma. Bex is so wonderful and so purely and innocently in love with Nick, but every good story needs a scandal. The one they chose passed way over the line and into gross territory. It was like they wanted to pick a scandal so outlandish that no one could possibly think that it could be inspired by something that Kate herself did. But it wasn’t just gross – it was also resolved in a completely unbelievable fashion. If you have no interest in the British monarchy, I wouldn’t recommend this, because you will likely be bored by Bex and Nick. But for the rest of us, there are some fun side characters and some delightfully blue-blooded snobbery to keep things interesting.

Page for page, the most fun you'll have with a book this year By RobynJC Page for page, this was the most delightful reading experience I've had in a year. It's the story of Bex, a tomboy and aspiring artist, a girl from the Midwest whose father invented the "Coucherator," who heads off for a semester at Oxford and falls in love with Nicholas of Wales, the future King of England. This is clearly inspired by Will and Kate, but it doesn't read like a pale knock off, or a veiled bit of fan fiction. It's a true, delightful, three dimensional work of fiction all on its own. Some of the characters - like Nicholas, the future King with a good heart and a heavy load to bear, and Freddie, his redheaded insanely charming troublemaking brother - are clearly their "real life" counterparts, but created with more humanity, warmth and wit than the "real" people have ever shown. Other characters, like Bex herself, are true inventions - Bex is not a stand in for Kate, really, but her own person, with her own flaws and her own point of view. (Bex's twin sister Lacey is Pippa re-imagined, and yes, there is a dalliance between Lacey and Freddie.) This book can be enjoyed on two totally different levels. If you enjoy the Royal Family, even casually, then you'll have fun seeing how the authors have imagined their inner lives. Many of the signposts of the "real" Will and Kate are here: the college meeting in the shared circle of friends, the secret dating, the big public breakup, the reunion - and it's fun to see them played out on the page here. But - and this is important - this book stands on its own, completely, apart from anything having to do with the "real" Royals. At its heart, it is a fantastic, soap opera-y, funny, emotionally insightful, poignant read. The authors are fans of classic old dishy novels (like Jackie Collins) and their delight in the dramatic storytelling just shines through. At the same time, the writing is surprisingly sharp and witty - MUCH better than standard "chick lit" writing. The English environments - including Oxford College, working life in London, and all the royal estates - are very clearly brought to life; there's a huge cast of characters, some inspired by real life, some not (the way they handled the obvious "Diana" situation is incredibly well done), and it's just insane amounts of fun. I just loved it on every single page. Sequel, please! PLEASE!

  • Sense and Sensibility is a novel by Jane Austen, and was her first published work when it appeared in 1811 under the pseudonym "A Lady". A work of romantic fiction, better known as a comedy of manners, Sense and Sensibility is set in southwest England, London and Kent between 1792 and 1797, and portrays the life and loves of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. The novel follows the young ladies to their new home, a meagre cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience love, romance and heartbreak. Jane Austen wrote the first draft of the novel in the form of a novel-in-letters (epistolary form) sometime around 1795 when she was about 19 years old, and gave it the title Elinor and Marianne. She later changed the form to a narrative and the title to Sense and Sensibility. "Sense" in the book means good judgment or prudence, and "sensibility" means sensitivity or emotionality. "Sense" is identified with the character of Elinor, while "sensibility" is identified with the character of Marianne. By changing the title, Austen added "philosophical depth" to what began as a sketch of two characters. The title of the book, and that of her next published novel, Pride and Prejudice (1813), may be suggestive of political conflicts of the 1790s. Austen biographer Claire Tomalin argues that Sense and Sensibility has a "wobble in its approach," which developed because Austen, in the course of writing the novel, gradually became less certain about whether sense or sensibility should triumph. Austen characterises Marianne as a sweet lady with attractive qualities: intelligence, musical talent, frankness, and the capacity to love deeply. She also acknowledges that Willoughby, with all his faults, continues to love and, in some measure, appreciate Marianne. For these reasons, some readers find Marianne's ultimate marriage to Colonel Brandon an unsatisfactory ending. Other interpretations, however, have argued that Austen's intention was not to debate the superior value of either sense or sensibility in good judgment, but rather to demonstrate that both are equally important but must be applied with good balance to one another. Dashwood extracts a promise from his son, that he will take care of his half-sisters; however, John's selfish and greedy wife, Fanny, soon persuades him to renege. John and Fanny immediately take up their place as the new owners of Norland, while the Dashwood women are reduced to the position of unwelcome guests. Mrs. Dashwood begins looking for somewhere else to live. In the meantime, Fanny's brother, Edward Ferrars, a pleasant, unassuming, intelligent but reserved young man, visits Norland and soon forms an attachment with Elinor. Fanny disapproves the match and offends Mrs. Dashwood with the implication that Elinor is motivated by money rather than love. Mrs. Dashwood indignantly speeds her search for a new home.

Amazon.com Review Though not the first novel she wrote, Sense and Sensibility was the first Jane Austen published. Though she initially called it Elinor and Marianne, Austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason. The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion. Commenting on Edward Ferrars, a potential suitor for Elinor's hand, Marianne admits that while she "loves him tenderly," she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for her sister: Oh! Mama, how spiritless, how tame was Edward's manner in reading to us last night! I felt for my sister most severely. Yet she bore it with so much composure, she seemed scarcely to notice it. I could hardly keep my seat. To hear those beautiful lines which have frequently almost driven me wild, pronounced with such impenetrable calmness, such dreadful indifference! Soon however, Marianne meets a man who measures up to her ideal: Mr. Willoughby, a new neighbor. So swept away by passion is Marianne that her behavior begins to border on the scandalous. Then Willoughby abandons her; meanwhile, Elinor's growing affection for Edward suffers a check when he admits he is secretly engaged to a childhood sweetheart. How each of the sisters reacts to their romantic misfortunes, and the lessons they draw before coming finally to the requisite happy ending forms the heart of the novel. Though Marianne's disregard for social conventions and willingness to consider the world well-lost for love may appeal to modern readers, it is Elinor whom Austen herself most evidently admired; a truly happy marriage, she shows us, exists only where sense and sensibility meet and mix in proper measure. --Alix Wilber

From School Library Journal Grade 3-7-- A pleasure to view, read, and hold, this new edition of an old favorite deserves space in every collection. From jacket painting, to cover (with Tinker Bell embossed in gold), to endpapers (dark maps of Neverland), Gustafson's artwork opens doors to glimpses of old friends and to new interpretations. Fifty oil paintings reveal expressive, changing characters. Peter Pan is dewy-cheeked, spry, wicked. Maternal Wendy is tender, then stoic. Even Hook is at times downcast. The Indians, proud and handsome, avoid stereotype. Masterly composition and use of light create dramatic full-page illustrations, accompanied by cameos of ordinary objects (kite, bear, tea kettle). Compared to Hague's illustrations for Peter Pan (Holt, 1987), which were dark and surreal, these are light and vital. Handsome bookmaking, Barrie's text, and Gustafson's pictures combine to breathe new life into Peter Pan's old shadow. --Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. From Library Journal Austen's novels (e.g., Pride and Prejudice, Audio Reviews, LJ 11/1/92) have lately received so much well-deserved media attention that another version of her first novel, in yet another format, may appear redundant to persons not sufficiently acquainted with the author's charms. However, for her many admirers, both present and future, this new audiobook is a treasure, thanks to a superb reading by actress Susannah Harker. The talented narrator is an ideal interpreter of Austen's delightful paean to the virtue of sense as she traces the struggles of her young heroines to achieve happiness. Harker skillfully captures each character's personality through subtle inflection, and she keenly, yet unobtrusively, underscores the author's delicious irony. With a reading of such quality, the romantic predicaments of the Miss Dashwoods become all-absorbing and the hours fly by too quickly. Most highly recommended for all libraries.Sister M. The other is wildly romantic and sensitive. And in a Jane Austen novel, you can guess that there are going to be romantic problems aplenty for both of them -- along with the usual entailment issues, love triangles, sexy bad boys and societal scandals. "Sense and Sensibility" is a quietly clever, romantic little novel that builds up to a dramatic peak on Marianne's romantic troubles, while also quietly exploring Elinor's struggles. When Mr. Dashwood dies, his entire estate is entailed to his weak son John and snotty daughter-in-law Fanny. His widow and her three daughters are left with little money and no home.Over the next few weeks, the eldest daughter Elinor begins to fall for Fanny's studious, quiet brother Edward... but being the down-to-earth one, she knows she hasn't got a chance. Her impoverished family soon relocates to Devonshire, where a tiny cottage is being rented to them by one of Mrs. Dashwood's relatives -- and Marianne soon attracts the attention of two men. One is the quiet, much older Colonel Brandon, and the other is the dashing and romantic Willoughby. But things begin to spiral out of control when Willoughby seems about to propose to Marianne... only to abruptly break off his relationship with her. And during a trip to London, both Elinor and Marianne discover devastating facts about the men they are in love with -- both of them are engaged to other women. And after disaster strikes the Dashwood family, both the sisters will discover what real love is about...At its heart, "Sense and Sensibility" is about two girls with completely opposite personalities, and the struggle to find love when you're either too romantic or too reserved for your own good. As well as, you know, the often-explored themes in Austen's novels -- impoverished women's search for love and marriage, entailment, mild scandal, and the perils of falling for a sexy bad boy who cares more for money than for true love... assuming he even knows what true love is.Austen's formal style takes on a somewhat more melancholy flavor in this book, with lots of powerful emotions and vivid splashes of prose ("The wind roared round the house, and the rain beat against the windows"); and she introduces a darker tone near the end. Still, there's a slight humorous tinge to her writing, especially when she's gently mocking Marianne and Mrs. Dashwood's melodrama ("They gave themselves up wholly to their sorrow, seeking increase of wretchedness in every reflection that could afford it").And Marianne and Elinor make excellent dual heroines for this book -- that still love and cherish each other, even though their polar opposite personalities frequently clash. What's more, they each have to become more like the other before they can find happiness. There's also a small but solid supporting cast -- the hunting-obsessed Sir John, the charming Willoughby (who has some nasty stuff in his past), the emotional Mrs. Dashwood, and the gentle, quiet Colonel Brandon, who shows his love for Marianne in a thousand small ways."Sense and Sensibility" is an emotionally powerful, beautifully written tale about two very different sisters, and the rocky road to finding a lasting love. Not as striking as "Pride and Prejudice," but still a deserving classic.

An Excellent Introduction to Jane Austen's Works By Debbie Lee Wesselmann Although SENSE AND SENSIBILITY is not of one Jane Austen's best novels, it is nonetheless a major novel, with the author's then-young talent in full display. Its publication in 1811 marked Austen as a huge literary talent, and its significance reverberates even today as contemporary readers re-discover the works of this author so adept at uncovering the foibles of nineteenth century aristocracy. The title refers to the two eldest Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, one of whom (Elinor) embraces practicality and restraint while the other (Marianne) gives her whole heart to every endeavor. When the Dashwoods - mother Mrs. Dashwood, Elinor, Marianne, and youngest sister Margaret - are sent, almost impoverished, to a small cottage in Devonshire after the death of their father and the machinations of their brother's wife, they accept their new circumstances with as much cheer as they can muster even though their brother and his wife have taken over the family estate and fortune. Their characters, albeit wildly different in their approaches to life, are impeccably honest and intelligent - and their suitors take notice. Elinor falls in love with the shy, awkward Edward, while Marianne's affections are lavished on the dashing hunter Willoughby. As in all Austen's books, love and marriage don't come easily, as affections aren't always returned and social jockeying sometimes takes precedence to true love. In an interestingly twist, the end of this novel brings into question which sister represents which part of the title.SENSE AND SENSIBILITY only hints at the social skewering Austen would use to such great effect in her later novels, and the humor here is only occasional and slight, as this novel adopts a generally serious tone. Parody is largely limited to the gossipy Mrs. Jenkins, who jumps to wild conclusions about situations she knows nothing about. Though arranged marriage and true love figure prominently in all of Austen's novels, this novel focuses almost exclusivity on the prospects of the two main characters, making it less complex than the novels that followed. Reserved Elinor and exuberant Marianne are expertly drawn, with Edward, Willoughby, and Colonel Brandon (whose lovesick hopes for Marianne are dashed again and again) also engaging creations. Except for the first page or two where the circumstances of the Dashwoods are set up through a series of deaths and relations, possibly causing some confusion, this novel is exceedingly easy to follow for contemporary readers. This novel is an excellent introduction to Jane Austen's works because of its relative simplicity (though readers should not dismiss it as simple) and the use of typical themes and social situations. Book clubs and students might want to explore the influence of money on nineteenth century British society as well as the meaning of the title as it applies to both the sisters and the other characters. It is also interesting to note both the helplessness and the extraordinary power of women in different circumstances.Just because this is not Austen's best novel, I could not take away a single star because it is such a delightful book. I highly recommend this novel for all readers.

One of the most beautiful books I own By Rebecca Taylor Sense & Sensibility has been reviewed ad infinitum, but I wanted to say that this is one of the most beautiful books I own.I was looking for a series of classics that I could purchase in hardcover to spruce up my personal library. I stumbled upon these special editions from Penguin Classics, with covers designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith. I love books, but these books still make me giddy with delight when I pick them up. The covers have so much character and they're sturdy. The fonts are classic and easy to read, and the paper is substantial. The ribbon bookmarks, that match the cover, are a really nice touch. The only bad thing I can say, and it's so minor, is that the binding is a little stiff when the book is new. It loosens as you read. There are more titles available, though some are still exclusive to the UK. I truly hope Amazon and Penguin make all editions available in the US and keep them coming!

The 1st two books were ok but this finale tho!!! Some craziness went on!! I found myself begging her to give Cali another shot and in the end I think that would have been best. This book made me love him and how Sincere he was. Savage was never really my pick but the last little bit of the story made me hate him. I also kinda wonder why her and LaLa wouldn't just be together? Whatever I read the entire series in less than 24hrs and I must say I enjoyed!!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A novel for people on holidays! By Amandajane I had a love/hate relationship with the novel Knowing Liam Riley by Sue Mackender. The book starts out strongly, in the middle it dragged and finished strongly, if I hadn't been reviewing it for NetGalley I probably would not have finished the book. The novel revolves around four very different women, from different backgrounds, different ages but the one thing that they have is common is a man by the name of Liam Riley. The premise is how their lives are affected by this man.The novel is separated into four books for each woman, so that we can have a good grip on each characters background and how theygot to the stage that they find themselves in.I adored the first book and the protagonist Joanne, we are given a real understanding of how Joanne became the woman she is. From a young girl to a young woman she has many horrendous things happen to her with no family support to fall back on. Her character is one that shows how one can triumph over tremendous adversity.I also, enjoyed the second book which is about a woman called Lizzie who also has a tough life but for different reasons than Joanne, for one thing she has the support of her family. As Lizzie is growing up it is her trusting nature and her family's troubles that cause many of her difficulties. We now come to the third book about an Artist Ava who lives in Malta with her husband and basically has the kind of life most of us can only dream of. Although, that is not enough for Ava, she is known to have affairs with her male models among others. The only feelings that I could drum up for this protagonist was dislike and disapproval.Ava has a daughter, a young woman called Imogen, she was a character that I could sympathise and empathise with. Yes, she makes poor decisions and lives in her own little world but with understanding of her background and her mother being Ava she hasn't had the best role model.I didn't enjoy the third book whatsoever, it just didn't seem to run with the quality of the previous two books. For me, it just dragged and I almost gave up on the whole novel because of it. I guess it didn't help as a mother and wife, I found the character Ava to be pathetic and distasteful. We now come to the fourth and final book, where we learn how all the characters are connected to Liam Riley. After the third book, I didn't care much about the ending and only persisted because of how much I liked the first two books and their characters Joanne and Lizzie.Liam Riley appears throughout the novel so it's not too hard to work out how they are all connected, which leaves very little mystery to want to keep reading to the end.Strangely, the last ten percent of the book was great and I saw the wonderful writing Mackender is capable of, like in the first two books in the novel.I believe that there will be people who will like it and probably enjoy it as a holiday read. Personally, it's not my style I found this book to be more like a Soap Opera and I think it would probably make a good mini series in the right hands.I hope that Sue Mackender continues with her writing and that her next book is able to bring the dynamics together all the way through to write not just an average but great novel.

I got carried away with the story and have just spent the best part of a day reading it.Eva Delacroix is determined to carry out her grandfather's dream and renovate Blue Heaven, the holiday home of her childhood, to his original specifications. When she arrives in town to start renovations she goes to the local bank to get finance and meets Daniel Bryman, whose grandfather co-designed Blue Heaven. He seems to have big ideas on exactly how those renovations should be done. He calls it a restoration but Eva isn't so sure. Eva needs to get the cottages in the grounds ready to let out as holiday homes if she is to meet the loan repayments and she isn't entirely certain if Daniel's motives are pure. This is the second book of Cynthia Harrison's I have reviewed and again it was a pleasure to lose myself in one of her stories. Well written with believably flawed characters, this is a book for women who like romance with a hint of a mystery. This is the first book in a series but stands alone quite comfortably.

A Little Intrigue, A Little Romance, A Whole Lot of Easy Reading By SoWrite "Linda" Cindy Harrison has done it again - an easy read that takes us all back to our childhood family vacation spots, whether in Michigan or not, and weaves her character's family history and modern day together. Her characters are believable, as is her story line. A good choice for a weekend with some romance, some intrigue, and a book full of enjoyable reading!

It's a fairly light little story, straightforward plot, likeable characters (most of them). It's just that nothing goes too deep, and I didn't really get too invested in the characters or the plot.
