It is what kept me engaged for the most part, especially for the few times when things rang so false it took me out of the story. It's nice that Beth's family clearly love her and want to protect her and see her happy, even her parents eventually. It's nice to think about epic love stories actually existing, even if they don't make the most sense in the context of this novel. What I didn't like:The law bungling with Drew and Tommy. It took me right out of the book because it's not something any semi-competent D.A. will write off on.Beth's handling the abuse. At some points, it seemed realistic, but more often it didn't ring true at all.Sacrificing a good character to get the pining lovers back together. The way in which he was offed was at least somewhat realistic, especially because it was out of nowhere. However, it was ultimately done to lead other characters back to each other so I was a little annoyed. What I'm confused about:A lot of the book, it feels like the audience is being told rather than shown. As a result, the story and the characters feels more shallow than they should. The timeline! I can never quite figure out when things are happening. The time skips just made it a lot harder for me to figure it out. While I don't mind time skips in general (I actually like non-linear time lines), this wasn't really well done. Markers of time didn't seem to match up to gadgets or names, which lead me to confusion. To sum up, I liked reading the book despite the problems I had with it. When a new book of hers comes out, I definitely won't avoid it.NOTE: There are graphic sexual acts in this novel, including child molestation scenes. If this is something that is going to disturb you, you might want to skip this book.

It's a beautiful, heartbreaking story about a young woman trying to piece her life back together and get over her tragic past.I teared up more than once reading this. Maggi Myers clearly writes for some major emotional impact, throughout the book I was crying from outrage, heartbreak, relief and happiness in turns. I just finished it and I still can't get my emotions back in check. I am so glad I picked it up (purely by mistake, I must add, but it was a good mistake!).Beth is such a wonderful character, so thought out and developed. Despite the things that happened to her she is strong and determined to not let it destroy her life. I felt everything she felt and at times it was just too much. It's been a while since I sympathized with a heroine so much. And Ryan is one of those silent heroes. The romance is so sweet, the chemistry between them was great without being over the top - realistic, and you just know they were meant to be.And Tommy. I can't talk about him without crying. Whatever she needed he was it. His story broke my heart, even if we are not told much you can tell he is somewhat of a loner, and this little girl holds a special place in his heart and he was just generally radiating goodness.Like I said, Maggi Myers did a great job writing this, it keeps you engaged the whole time and has the perfect pace - it's slow when it needs to be and fast when it needs to be. All the characters somehow feel real, even if their appearance is brief the author has you get to know them. She gives us glimpses into Ryan's life and I loved that because I wondered about him.I loved the ending. There was this huge teary grin on my face and everything was right with the world. It ended just the way it should have.Everyone needs to check this out, I'm a fan of Maggi Myers for life! Oh, second-chance romance fans, you will absolutely love this! It's the perfect (and original) story of getting the timing right between the two people who are meant to be.A fair warning, though - this is not a YA read. There are very explicit scenes of sexual abuse, and a graphic sex scene or two.

She's a happy, confident, sassy girl to most people, but inside she feels betrayed and unworthy. Beth has a secret, a dark memory that has just recently come back to haunt her. With the help of a family friend, Beth is able to escape her nightmares and she is given a chance to move on beyond her past.A summer love, a confidant and protector along with caring relationships are the best therapy a young heart can find. This is the tale of a survivor and kindred spirits on a journey of optimism and forgiveness.I was very moved by this story. The author's writing is impeccable and despite the strong subject matter, she skillfully managed to narrate sensitive scenes without being gruesome. While I found myself crying at several scenes, I was also able to find solace on the majority of the characters throughout this book. To say the least character development was solid and I loved the beautiful ending. I have not read anything like this before, and originality wins my five star rating.
