Karen Wright is the epitome of self-control: always capable and in control to bear others' burdens, especially those of her husband Bill and siblings Travis and Melissa. However, inside, Karen suffers from high anxiety and a mild heart attack has led to regular consummation of nerve prescription. In the new Christian novel by author Ron Short, The Need Word, Karen's taking of her prescription leaves her almost unconscious in sleep and not aware of her young nephew's near-fatal run-in with a car. Now the woman who doesn't like the word "need" finds that she needs God, as she goes under criminal investigation for child endangerment and prepares herself to go inside a woman's prison. As she cries out to Jesus within her cell's walls, Karen starts to see God teaching her the power of needing others and experiencing spiritual transformation from self-control to controlled in grace and love by God.

I did not know what it was about at all before I started reading it, and it kept me engaged, wondering what was going to happen to Karen next! Being a person who often prefers independence and not asking others for help, this book affected me greatly. Since reading it I've realized that I do need to ask people for help more often. I enjoy helping others, and if I don't ask them to help me when they can, I'm depriving them of that privilege too. That's what community is all about - being there for each other and helping one another, but we have to let others know that we have a need. It's totally fine to have needs, and to allow others to bless us by filling them. You should definitely read this book, especially if you have strong independent tendencies. But be warned: it will affect you, but in a good way!

By Jimmy The "Need Word" is a very powerful story of what God can do in a person's life once they yield control of their life into the mighty hands of God! If you are looking for a book that will make you cry one minute, feel Karen's fear the next and make you even thank God that by His Grace you have never been in a similar situation, then this book is a must read for you!!! I am sure that some who read this book will be able to relate as some HAVE been in this very situation and had to find out for themselves that this little word "NEED" is something that we all must come to grips with at some point and time in our life! Enjoy this very powerful story based on a real life situation, written by my close and dear Friend Ron Short! Ron, We Love You Buddy, keep up the great work for God!Pastor Jimmy Haning

Like Karen, we may feel we must always be strong and mask an image that we have everything together, especially if we are in a position of leadership. This is simply portraying an image that we are not. We are all in need of a Savior no matter what title we hold. I believe this novel will serve as a guide to help its readers break down walls of pride, recognize the people God has placed in their lives to help them through this journey, and allow Christ to be their supreme strength. Despite the trials Karen faced, she had to make one choice in the end and that was to let go of everything she was and hold onto everything God is.

One of the ladies from the senior center lovingly knitted those red mittens, and Gracia had her eye on them. They were the perfect match to her winter apparel.Filled with innocence and dreams for the future, Gracia felt that kind of life was far out of reach. Her lack of self esteem held her back from those things that every girl desires. There were times I wanted to shake her and other times I loved her. She demonstrated such a warm Christian spirit, and I admired her willingness to step forward and take on tasks that most young women would balk at.Jake was a bit aloof and hard to read, and his attitude frustrated me at times, but I loved his character, devoted to his father and the farm he loved. His devotion and compassion for family and community are definite assets to this hardworking young man's character.Sparks flew as these two characters clashed and misunderstood each other, yet the atmosphere sizzled as a flash of attraction smoldered beneath the surface. Is this relationship going anywhere? Is there even a relationship to question? Pick up a copy of this sweet Christmas novella and find out for yourself if the sparks ignite and light a fire under Jake and Gracia!Disclaimer: I received a PDF copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. All expressed opinions are my own, and no monetary compensation was received for this review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Delightful Story! By Dali I love Christmas stories and I love novellas. Laura V. Hilton has combined the two and come up with a wonderfully delightful story that is just pure entertainment.Gracia Dykstra and Jake Trivett have a little bit of history between them, and although Gracia had always felt something for Jake, the feeling never seemed to be mutual. Add to that the fact that Jake moved to California and it all became a moot issue. Or rather, it was a moot issue until now. because much to Gracia’s surprise, Jake has returned. Jake’s return finds Gracia and Jake working together to raise funds for the Senior Center where Gracia works while helping Jake and his dad get their tree farm back up and running. Their time spent together has its ups and downs, misunderstandings, crossed signals, and an old flame thrown in for good measure. All of this had me laughing one minute, wanting to shake someone the next minute and sighing the next. I loved the banter between Jake and Gracia as well as the interactions of the other characters. It made for one great emotional roller coaster resulting in a fun, romantic and entertaining read that held me captive from beginning to end.*****I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Light-hearted reading that leaves you smiling By GreyHairedLady As other reviews have already summarized the book, I'd like to take a different approach.Gracia is a very likable character -- although there were times I wanted to slap her upside the head and tell her to quit expecting life to imitate the romantic fiction she enjoys reading. She was letting too many romantic-fiction-fueled thoughts steal the joyful reality that was right there in front of her.Jake is equally likable -- and also deserves a good slap upside the head. Come on man, can't you see what's going on?Now, isn't it a sign of a good book when you feel like you could be interacting with the characters? I enjoyed reading this light-hearted book and look forward to more books like this from Laura Hilton. My only issue may be with the title itself -- I kept waiting for the Christmas mittens to enter the story. The title just didn't seem to fit the tale.
