Successfully steering through the medical system can be a challenge. In The Patient's Playbook, Michelson gives away secrets of the trade--lessons he's learned from more than thirty years of helping people get better outcomes . . . He levels the playing field by providing average patients who have ordinary health insurance with the resources, advice, and tools they need to make better medical decisions . . . As a patient, you have more power than you think. This book will help you find that power and use it to maximum advantage." --From the Foreword by Peter T. Scardino, M.D., Chair, Department of Surgery, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center"What a tour de force! Michelson details, step by crucial step, how to navigate the terrifying world of doctors, hospitals, second opinions, drug trials, and insurance so you get lifesaving results." --AARP Best Books of 2015"Michelson implores patients to be intensely involved in their own care... He urges patients...to "bring their A-game" to the doctor's office...advocat[ing] smart care, not more care." --The Wall Street Journal"In this unique and useful book, [Michelson] maps out a plan to organize competent medical care when needed....he provides advice and resources that help individuals become medically prepared, make sound health-care decisions, and more likely achieve favorable results....An invaluable resource, The Patient’s Playbook can effectively assist individuals in navigating the complex and often overwhelming world of illness." --Booklist (Starred Review)"Unlike most how-to books, this one is thick with advice and instructions....what's at stake: Your need to obtain the best possible diagnosis and treatment from an expensive but fractured netowrk of health care providers....The steps Michelson offers for negotiating the system mirror what his company does for patients--finding top experts and coordinating care....his insights about the importance of getting your caregivers to notice and talk to you is invaluable."--Sarasota Herald-Tribune "A primer on making the right moves as an active participant in your health care....Michelson is the CEO of a company that works with patients to get the best possible care--not only from the best possible physicians...but also through guiding guiding them through the process described in this book, one that shifts the role of care director over to the patient....with this useful book, patients can have more say over what direction treatment takes rather than just going along for the ride."--Kirkus Reviews

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Introduction   After I was born, in 1951, my mother went into a major postpartum depression. For the first six months of my life, she couldn’t get out of bed, leaving me in the care of my father and maternal grandmother.  I actually didn’t learn about this until I was forty-five,   and someone casually mentioned it at a party. Sadly, the stigma of psychiatric illness was so great at the time (and still can be today) that families touched by chronic depression often had to carry the burden in silence.  My parents had been counseled by doctors that they shouldn’t discuss it, so they didn’t. My mother  eventually  recovered, but  then  she  became bipolar, which meant there were days, months,  and years when she’d be  fine,  and then long periods when she was incapable of getting up, making dinner,  or holding   a conversation. During  her manic phases, she’d be on a high  for  days or weeks, talking  nonstop  and sometimes  being cruel  to me and others  I know she loved. I couldn’t predict when her disease would take control of her. Coming home from school, I never knew if I’d be greeted by a fire-breathing dragon or a smiling mother with a glass of milk and a plate of cookies.  I had to feel around the edges of the door for danger, the way they teach you in fire safety training. When  I was  ten,  my  mother   screamed at me  for forty-five minutes because I left  a sneaker  on the steps.  The only ten-year-old who hasn’t left a sneaker on the steps is a ten-year-old who doesn’t have sneakers or steps. During an ugly scene when I was twelve or thirteen, I physically held my mother down in a chair and told her, “You will stop yelling at my brother right now.” That moment changed everything between us. She was my mother, and I loved her, but her disease was dangerous, and I had to be assertive. Although my mother’s illness was hard on me, it had to have been worse for my father. The instant I was born, he lost his wife. And yet he remained extraordinarily positive and strong. He was a genuine role model, the moral center of gravity for every community that he was in—whether it was our larger family, the synagogue, the Boy Scouts, his business, or his trade association. He was the guy who would solve other people’s problems. I could talk to Dad for hours. By my early teens, I was actively involved in helping with my mother’s care. That was when she received her first electroshock therapy treatment for recurring depression.  Later, we had her on daily lithium, a mood stabilizer. I had to grow up and become a responsible caregiver at a very young age. And here’s where the story gets complicated. When I was in high school, my father came home one evening, clearly agitated. For me, the sun came up at night when my father walked through the door. As tired as he was, those hours with him were absolutely precious. If he came home anxious or upset, that was a big deal. He had gone for his annual physical that day with his primary care physician, a man with   whom he’d attended high school in Newark, New Jersey. The doctor had recommended that my father see a certain cardiologist. A week or two later Dad came home even more rattled than before.  The cardiologist had told him he needed to have open-heart surgery. I was overcome with worry. Was my dad going to die? Losing him wouldn’t just mean I’d  be an orphan,  practically  speaking; it would mean I’d  have to take full responsibility  for my mother. That was not a reality I could handle. That night I couldn’t sleep. The next day I couldn’t concentrate at school. I got home that afternoon and picked up the phone to dial Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. Although we lived in suburban Union, New Jersey, I read The New York Times every night, and somehow I recalled “Lenox Hill” always being mentioned.  I knew that when you wanted to go to a nice restaurant, see a good play, or go to a top hospital—you went to New York. “Can I please speak to the head of cardiology?” I asked.   I’m sure my teenage voice must   have cracked on the line as I spoke, but I wasn’t going to aim low. “Dad,” I announced when my father got home, “I set up an appointment for you to get a second opinion   from the chairman of cardiology at Lenox Hill.” “You know, that’s a good idea,” he said. “I’m gonna do it.” And that was that. On the day of his appointment, I waited at home in agony. This had to go right. I couldn’t imagine a future without him. I was seeing the walls coming down. It was all I could do not to knock him over when he walked in the door. “What did he say, Dad?  What did he say?” “He said, ‘There’s nothing wrong with your heart, and the doctor who recommended surgery should be shot in a public square.’ ” Exact words. He was ecstatic. And I still remember where I was standing in the kitchen when he said it. I remember this better than I remember what I had for breakfast today. My father never had any heart problems.  No high blood pressure, no calcium in his coronaries, no leaky valves. He passed away in 2007, succumbing to something totally unrelated to his heart. But back in 1988, when I was building my first company, I met Dr. Robert H. Brook, who was then the vice president and director of RAND Health, a health policy think tank. He had just published research showing that many of the major surgical procedures being done in the United States were harming rather than helping patients. In fact, when it came to coronary  artery  bypass  graft  surgeries—what  my father  was told  he needed—14  percent were done for “inappropriate reasons,” and 30 percent were done for “equivocal” reasons. I thought, My God, this doctor has found scientific evidence of what I suspected was going on some twenty years ago. I still think of my father every day and how his “case” ignited my passion for helping people to get better care. Managing serious illness is not easy, but armed with  the knowledge in this book, and the support  of a trusted primary care doctor,  I truly believe that everyone can—and must—become  a  more powerful  and effective health care consumer.

By Quickbeam Michelson, an attorney, has written an interesting and lively book about accessing the best care in the US health care system. The foundation of the book is a series of stories of people he has helped access care and accurate diagnosis. It is one success story after another and that certainly builds the reader's confidence in Michelson as a health system ombudsman. He goes on to advise, with the examples he has provided, on how to get the best competent care for yourself and those you love.I liked the book a lot and feel that it is a good primer for anyone approaching the US system with a serious illness. Many of Michelson's examples are people with unusual conditions or hard to diagnose illnesses. I've been an RN for 30 years and his stories were probably more transparent to me than to the lay reader. Mistakes happen all the time and some conditions (especially auto-immune) are often frustrating to get properly diagnosed and treated. I was appalled by the example of the patient with psoriatic arthritis who was not diagnosed by her dermatologist. It was evident to me at the beginning of her case study.Michelson has a glib "follow me, boys!" aura to his writing that is a tiny bit showman. Most people do not have a health policy lawyer to compile their health binder and take it to the Mayo for them. I think his connections to the superstars in medicine remove him a bit from day to day medicine experiences for the rest of us. I also think he misses one huge aspect of the health care system; the large number of people who think they have en exotic disease and do not want to hear they have plain old hypertension of diabetes. Not everyone has a rare disease. There is a reason for the old saying that when "you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras".Most people can get a lot of good solid advice from this book. I'd caution people to understand the waters of the real medical system do not part as easily for regular folks as they do for Michelson. I'd also ask that in an effort to be health care assertive, people not yell, scream and throw things at their health care workers (yes, that happens). The reality is that people do die, every one of us and no matter how assertive/aggressive you are, some outcomes are inevitable. With that caveat, I liked the book and think it can be valuable for those lost in the confusion of illness and treatment.

Michelson specializes in helping people get good medical care in serious or challenging illness, but his advice and strategies make sense for routine medical care as well. Many patients are so used to doing what the doctor says that they don't take charge of their own care -and thus get overtreated, ignored, or otherwise get less than the best outcome and care.Michelson blends persoanal and individual stories with an excellent set of steps and strategies for getting the best care. Speaking up for yourself, selecting a good doctor, coordinating your care, doing research that your doctor might not have time to do, being a collaborator with the doctor and an advocate for yourself, and so on. And having someone else as your quarterback, the person who coordinates things and advocates for you. And, perhaps most important, ways to make yourself seem like a person rather than a case when you're in the hospital.Much of what Michelson recommends is essentially assertiveness, and he includes what amount to scripts for handling potentially awkward conversations with medical people. So - practical information, inspiration, and personal stories that illustrate and inspire. If you are facing a health crisis or serious chronic condition in yourself or in someone close to you, read this book and put the steps and actions into practice. It really could save your life.

Be an informed consumer of your medical care By Mainiac Most of us are aware of the growing crisis in our healthcare system, but might not understand the breadth of this nor how to navigate the broken system when we need healthcare. This is such a wonderful book to learn about both.I'm not usually a fan of books that are full of anecdotes, but in this book each one is used to provide a very clear example that is anchored in the experience of the author, and many are backed up with references or resources. The book unfolds through three parts (each with mutiple chapters) that give advice on how to select and work with your primary care physician, how to escalate to an expert and deal with an emergency, and how to cope with a serious illness. The end of each chapter has a nice summary of the points in that chapter to recap.)A constant message throughout is that you should be an informed consumer of your medical care, that you should keep track of your own (and family members) medical history, and that you need to advocate for yourself and inform yourself.Since we all need medical care even in the broken system, this is a book for all of us.

The paper was an unexpected inheritance from a close colleague, and Lois must keep it for at least a year, bringing a host of challenges, lessons, and blessings into her life. When Lois pulls into Green on New Year's Day, she expects a charming little town full of smiling people. She quickly realizes her mistake. After settling into a loaned house out on Route 2, she finds herself battling town prejudices and inner doubts and making friends with the most surprising people: troubled teenager Katy, good-looking catfish farmer Chris, wise and feisty Aunt Helen, and a female African American physician named Kevin.

Whether fighting a greedy, deceitful politician or rescuing a dog she fears, Lois notices the headlines in her life have definitely improved. She learns how to provide small-town news in a big-hearted way and realizes that life is full of newsworthy moments. When she encounters racial prejudice and financial corruption, Lois also discovers more about the goodness of real people and the importance of being part of a community. While secretly preparing the paper for a sale, Lois begins to realize that God might indeed have a plan for her life and that perhaps the allure of city life and career ambition are not what she wants after all.

By A Reader Who Relates Judy Christie created a marvelous story with her first novel about Lois, the big-city journalist, who finds herself the owner of a small-town newspaper in Louisiana. As this "outsider" becomes accustomed to her new surroundings, she makes many friends and enemies along the way. She is confronted throughout the story with not only her actions, but also her reactions when she is deals with injustice, compassion, judgement, and especially God's will for her life. Well-written inspirational fiction has always been a favorite media of mine. I always get wrapped up in the story, all the while finding the heroin or hero dealing with basic values that each of us face every day of our lives. Judy Christie was a journalist for many years, and writes eloquently about what she knows best. She is currently a consultant and writes Christian motivational books....which she also does very, very well. As she combined the two with well-written fiction, she wrote a story with many characters her readers hope she will develop and introduce to us more deeply. Given an opportunity, this is an author who will give us many stories from Green, Louisiana in the future. This is a good book for the individual reader and an excellent story for book club discussions. Buy it. Read it. Enjoy it. Tell a friend.

By LSmith I picked up this book when it was a free offering, but just recently got around to it and finished it in one sitting - something I RARELY do for a Kindle book! I found this tale very entertaining and heart-felt. What I really enjoyed about it is that the reader could very well see himself or herself as any one of a number of the characters, even the "bad guys" who are no better or worse than typical small town leaders. I also was surprised that this was marketed as a "Christian" book. Yes, Lois (the main character) has occasional bouts where she is analyzing her personal relationship with God or gets friendly "advice" of that nature, but they add to the story, they don't distract or become the story itself. A GREAT read.

It was a quick read but in no way fell short on details. There are many interesting characters in here that were very familiar to me. You will probably find that you already know many of these people in your own lives. And most of us can relate to the main character "Lois" with our daily struggles and figuring out which path to choose. The story flowed very smoothly and I found myself reading several chapters in a row. Now that I think about it, I'm ready for the next one.

I went through so many different emotions while reading, I laughed, cried but all in all was a heartwarming story with a mixture of Suspense involved! The suspense kept you on the edge of your seat itching to find out more! There were several twists and turns, that I never saw coming! This book made me feel like I was actually with the characters, which is why I went through so many emotions! This story will truly touch your heart! This was Mac and Callie's Story! Callie was such a strong character that I truly admired. Callie had to deal with lots of loss! Even with the death of her parents, her fiancee, and the strained relationship with her sister, Callie kept on and enrolled herself in college for her Master's Degree. Even barely getting by she still kept pushing forward, never complaining.Mac is Dean at the college whom is divorced with a two year old son, Jason. Mac was attracted to Callie the first time he saw her! While working together that attraction only grows. Mac has trust issues because of his ex-wife. I think he had the hardest time because he felt like he was competing with a ghost. Then Students start overdosing, Mac, Callie, the school along with Police want to stop the drugs in their small college town but the dealers will stop at nothing to keep from being found, including murder! Mac and Callie were thrown one obstacle after another, not only was their life endangered but they had to fight for an relationship together! I highly recommend this book!My review can be found on [...]

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Bittersweet tale By Laura At the very beginning, the heart of this book exudes a sort of melancholy feeling. Callie is dealing with the grief from the death of her fiance. We learn a lot about her childhood and the things that she had to go through as she was growing up. Her childhood was not an easy or happy one. Consequently, it seemed and felt to her like Kyle was all she had. When he died, she was devastated. In the midst of the grief, she has decided that it's time to move on with her life, but she still has trouble letting go of Kyle.Callie is a quiet girl that stays to herself. She is believable in her grief and the way she relives things, not wanting to let them go and afraid she will forget. I enjoyed her as a character, as I did most of the characters from this book. Mac is just trying to deal with his life, not really looking to get involved with anyone. The fact that it is a relationship that is not sought out by either party seems to make the feelings more real. The biggest problem I had with this book is only that the author did such a fantastic job of making Kyle such a great guy, to make him worthy of the level of grief Callie was feeling even after such a long time (I'm assuming), that by the time I met Mac I didn't care about him. I wanted Kyle! Even after a few chapters of Callie and Mac, and even rooting for them to get together on one level, I found myself still hoping that the military made a mistake and Kyle would come walking in. I will say that Callie's relationship with Mac was probably healthier. She had grown and matured a little more by the time she got involved with him, so he wasn't her entire life the way Kyle was. She was more her own person by this time, with her own identity. The different things that are dealt with in this book are portrayed very well and realistically. The levels of grief, trying to move on without forgetting, becoming your own, independent person apart from the grief and the person that you are grieving are all a part of the story, but not overwhelmingly so. I loved the box of Kyle's things that Callie keeps, and Mac's reaction to it when he finds it. I could see myself doing something like that in Callie's place.A very bittersweet love story that will take you through the whole spectrum of emotions. I found myself proud of Callie by the end, as though she was a friend I knew, rather than a character in a book. This is a great read - another win for Ms. Joachim.

Storyline: GOODIntimacy Level: SWEETEnjoyment: GOODTHOUGHTSTwo years after Callie lost her fiance, Kyle, to the war taking place in Iraq, she decides to try and move on with her life. She is now attending Kensington State University to get her masters. Callie starts working in the administrative office where, Mac happens to work and is the dean of the school. Mac is a single parent with a 2-year-old son named Jason. Working together both Mac and Callie will try to fight an attraction for each other, which will later turn into to an affair and a marriage proposal. While they are still getting to know each other, they have to get through Callie's past, Audrey, Mac's ex wife, illegal drugs on campus and death.I have to admit, before reading the book I sort of had an idea how this book would turn out based on the title, but I was caught off guard. The book was an unexpected surprise for me and I really enjoyed it. The main story of the book is the love story involving Mac and Callie. However, so many unexpected twists vamped up the story for me.There was the issue with Callie's past and Mac feeling as if he is competing with Kyle's ghost. We have the draining and annoying ex wife Audrey, which I have to say I was surprised by what she was plotting and what she did towards the end. Then we have someone trying to kill Callie that is connected to the illegal drug ring going on at the campus. I was so very shock to find out who was behind the drug ring; I never saw that coming, wow. All this leads up to a good read. If you are looking for a nice, sweet, light romance with a plot and twist then this is your read. If you are into the hardcore erotica then this will not be your sort of read.PS: I love the song Unchained Melody by the Righteous brothers, Callie and Mac's first dance was to this song *sighing*. I actually played that song after I finish reading. Callie's story prequel story is Now and Forever, Callie's Story.

Is finding true love as easy as an attitude change? Thirty-something Emma Beckett has always looked down on 'the glass is half full' optimists, believing it's better to be realistic than delusional. But when she loses her high-powered job and fiancé in the same week, even Emma has difficulty keeping calm and carrying on. With her world spinning out of control, and bolstered by a challenge from her best friend, Emma makes a radical decision. From here on in, she'll behave like Pollyanna: attempting to always see the upside, no matter how dire the situation. Can adopting a positive attitude give Emma the courage to build a new life, or is finding the good in everything a very bad idea?

About the Author Talli Roland was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. By age 13, she’d finished her first novel and received very encouraging rejections from publishers. Talli put writing on hold to focus on athletics, achieving provincial records and becoming a Canadian university champion in the 4 × 400 meter relay. After getting her BA, she turned to writing again, earning a Masters in Journalism. A few years later, she left Canada behind and settled in London, where she now lives with her husband and their young son. Talli writes fun and witty romantic fiction. Her debut novel, The Hating Game, was short-listed for Best Romantic Read at the UK's Festival of Romance, and her second, Watching Willow Watts, was selected as an Amazon Customer Favourite. That woman can write!". Fast-forward two years and Talli has become one of my favourite authors. When she announces a new book I can't wait to get my hands on it, and when it is released I can't wait to read it!Talli's latest release is The Pollyanna Plan. It tells the story of Emma Beckett, who is living a perfectly adequate life. She engrosses herself in her job and has a fiance who loves his job as much as she loves hers. They are planning to marry as soon as they can leave their desks long enough to plan a wedding and although Emma doesn't feel any sparks with George she does feel that their relationship is perfectly fine. She chooses to look at life in a realistic way and if that doesn't make her the world's most exciting person, well, oh well! When Emma loses her fiance and her job in the same week her best friend Alice challenges her to live her life like Pollyanna. Instead of always seeing the glass as half-empty, Alice encourages Emma to see the glass as half-full. Figuring that she has nothing to lose Emma goes along with the experiment and suddenly she is seeing the world in colour instead of monochrome! As she decorates her sterile apartment, gets to know her little half-sister, and meets a man that makes her heart race Emma finally sees what she's been missing all along. However when her new love interest's secret is revealed, Emma's new world comes crashing down around her. She sees how participating in the experiment opened her up to new heartbreak and she closes herself off to the world again. Is Emma fated to carry out a dull but safe existence or will the changes that she has recently made lure her back to a life of risk with a great potential payoff?I couldn't help but love The Pollyanna Plan. The plot drew me in from the very beginning. I've long been a believer that being positive even when you don't feel like it can go a long way towards changing your outlook on life, so I loved that Talli chose to explore this theme. I also found myself really enjoying the fact that both Emma and her love interest Will narrate the book. Will's voice isn't as frequent as Emma's but somehow the dual narration really worked for me. I loved being able to get inside of Will's head and compare his thoughts to Emma's, especially at the beginning of the story. I also really appreciate the fact that Talli's books are polished with a capital P. There are no spelling or grammatical errors, but best of all the story flows. There are no awkward sentences or parts of the plot that don't seem quite right. Everything comes together in a way that contributes to an excellent reading experience. The worst part of The Pollyanna Plan? It ended, and now I have to wait until Talli's next book comes out. Yes, I loved it that much, and yes, you need to buy yourself a copy right now!

The Pollyanna Plan starts off with its heroine getting thrown twice. Emma Beckett is a sensible underwriter in London, living her life in what she considers to be realistic expectations. Emma is strictly no-nonsense in her approach to life. She has a relationship with a boring fellow named George and a strained family life with her mother, in place following the death of her father. In short order though, Emma loses both the boring boyfriend and the job when she gets downsized. Her free spirit best friend Alice persuades her to start looking at life more postively, like the character Pollyanna, to find something optimistic in everything. Emma dives into the experience, which draws her to a karaoke evening with Alice. The other half of the equation is Will Ballard, who's spending his time working at a home decorating store, though he in fact comes from a well to do family with a paint business. Will has retreated from the world, for the most part, dealing with a medical diagnosis that's changed his life. There's friction between he and his father, over his refusal to take the reins of the company. Will feels a sense of safety in isolation, not wanting the pity that will come with people knowing about his condition. The pair meet when Emma comes to Will's shop looking for paint, and then when they turn up at the same karaoke establishment. There's a spark between them, definite chemistry from the start, and the story follows them both as they work through issues with family, and with their own wariness about trusting in love.Talli Roland is a transplanted Canadian living in England, and she's obviously soaked in the British way of life. The dialogue and atmosphere of the book has a very British sensibility. It feels British, in other words. She has a talent for picking up on details, telling us a lot about a person from the way their home looks, or the way they pay attention to the world around them. She weaves these details, large and small, to give the reader a very strong sense of the world she's writing in. Much of that, of course, is in and around London, but even on a trip to Croatia, she makes the reader strongly see the place she's bringing a character to. Sometimes the detail is less tangible, but still very effective. A small moment that I enjoyed particularly demonstrates that, and it's a nod towards personality traits: Emma is spending time with her sister Meg, a child, and is struck by the fact that she doesn't know how to talk with kids.Talli has a light, deft, and funny style of writing, and it comes across in the sharp, clever dialogue a lot, and in characterization, which feels like the solid bedrock of her writing. Her characters feel grounded and real, like the sort of person you might meet in the park or at a pub. Alice is the funniest character of the lot, a firecracker sort of person who nonetheless has depth beneath the cheery and irreverent personality she shows the world. She has something of a mirror in Lou, Will's neighbour, who's a loyal and outspoken sort of person, watchful and still likely to say something off colour. Emma's ex George comes across, to use a Britishism, as a boring self involved prat, but that's what makes him work. We've all known a George in our life, if not more, and while the author doesn't employ such a technique, we've all been tempted to push a George into the Thames. When we meet Emma's mother for the first time, knowing she's remarried and has another daughter, we expect one thing to happen, and instead the author takes us in a different direction, and we end up understanding, just as Emma does, what her mother has felt in the aftermath of the death of Emma's father. The two leading characters are of course the core of the book. Emma is a smart, likeable woman, torn between what's safe and realistic for her on the one hand, and hope and optimism on the other. She has to figure these things out for herself as she goes along, wavering between looking on the bright side of life and just going back to being cynical about life. She has a sense of humour, and the reader can really empathize with her. Her character voice is very distinctive, and true to life. Will feels just as real as Emma does. Coping with a medical diagnosis that's difficult, he's been burned before in love, wants to pull back away from the world, instead of dealing with it. There is a warm, playful chemistry between these two, and that's all to the credit of the writer. As the two characters embark on this journey through the book, the reader can't help but root for them. The novel has a brisk pace to it, clever banter, and strongly rendered characters who feel true to life. Talli has a winner with this book, and you'll enjoy reading it.

Briah went through her pregnancy alone until 3T came along and that man was truly a blessing. She and Quan were something else when they were around each other. Although they weren't together they ended up building a strong relationship! Kayla didn't know what she was getting into when she first met the obsessed man she began dealing with. I was scared for her life. That man had no remorse for beating her. I was glad when she realized that she needed to live for herself and not her parents. I was also glad that both she and Melo came to their senses. They loved each other and there was no denying it. Jade's life was going good until she dated a man she really didn't know. I believe Scott knew something but didn't know how to tell her. Her finding things out on her own almost seemed to have set her back a couple steps. Grandma D was entirely too funny and most definitely did not care what came out of her mouth. This was definitely a very good series!!

There was no happy ending for all the characters but an indication that most of them had an acceptable outcome. Well done.

At one time, heart disease was a death sentence. In The Heart Healers, world renowned cardiologist Dr. James Forrester tells the story of the mavericks and rebels who defied the accumulated medical wisdom of the day to begin conquering heart disease. By the middle of the 20th century, heart disease was killing millions and, as with the Black Death centuries before, physicians stood helpless. Visionaries, though, had begun to make strides earlier. On Sept. 7, 1895, Ludwig Rehn successfully sutured the heart of a living man with a knife wound to the chest for the first time. Once it was deemed possible to perform surgery on the heart, others followed. In 1929, Dr. Werner Forssman inserted a cardiac catheter in his own arm and forced the x-ray technician on duty to take a photo as he successfully threaded it down the vein into his own heart...and lived. On June 6, 1944 - D-Day - another momentous event occurred far from the Normandy beaches: Dr. Dwight Harken sutured the shrapnel-injured heart of a young soldier, saved his life and the term "cardiac surgeon" born.

Dr. Forrester tells the story of these rebels and the risks they took with their own lives and the lives of others to heal the most elemental of human organs - the heart. The result is a compelling chronicle of a disease and its cure, a disease that is still with us, but one that is slowly being worn away by "The Heart Healers".

Review

"a stunning survey of cardiology’s “Golden Age” and the “misfits” who made it so... It’s a book of marvels." - Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"Forrester brings history to life and explains complex procedures for lay readers in this excellent book for readers interested in medical history and those who want to understand modern medical procedures." - Library Journal, Starred Review

“A heartwarming account of risk-taking, iconoclastic doctors who achieved extraordinary cardiovascular breakthroughs and of the patients who trusted them.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Dr. James Forrester has been pioneering cardiac treatment for his entire storied career. Now, he brings his ideas and knowledge to all-and the impact will be profound. This book changes the landscape in heart health.” ―David B. Agus, M.D. Professor of Medicine and Engineering, University of Southern California; New York Times-bestselling author of The End of Illness and A Short Guide to a Long Life

“Dr. James Forrester's The Heart Healers is a fast-moving tale told by someone who has lived through many of the developments he describes. Forrester is a gifted writer whose prose flows effortlessly and is, by turns, both inspired and irreverent He always keeps the narrative moving quickly, letting readers in on the fact that that success was not inevitable, describing false starts and blind alleys along the way. The Heart Healers is deepened by the fact of James Forrester's career, his contact with patients and colleagues and the personal stories of patients he has treated and woven into the narrative.” ―Bruce Fye, M.D. Author of Caring for the Heart: Mayo Clinic and the Rise of Specialization

“James Forrester is one of the great medical storytellers of our era. In The Heart Healers, he applies his exceptional talent to illuminate -- and tell the backstories of -- the momentous milestones in cardiovascular medicine and surgery.” ―Eric Topol, cardiologist, Author of The Patient Will See You Now and The Creative Destruction of Medicine

“This book is a great read!!! Even if one is familiar with some of the players who contributed to breakthroughs in cardiovascular medicine, to learn the back stories from an expert who lived through the events is a very enriching experience. Dr. Forrester makes a very compelling case that the misfits, mavericks, and rebels who persevered with their ideas truly impacted our society in ways that we cannot fully appreciate since we now take those things for granted. This is a story of disruptive innovation before that term was even invented!!” ―Elliott Antman, MD, Professor of Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School and President, American Heart Association 2014-2015

The soon-to-be-deposed Emperor of All Maladies is heart disease By Alex D As a doctor, I am drawn to non-fiction books about medicine written in lay language. My all-time favorite is Siddhartha Mukherjee’s Emperor of All Maladies, the biography of cancer. James Forrester’s Heart Healers now sits beside it on my shelf of medical classics. It is the Emperor’s bookend, written about heart disease.Forrester’s book is an unvarnished eyewitness to an incredible era of history, since he was both an observer and an important participant in what he calls “the greatest medical breakthrough of our times.” While that title initially smacks of potential whopping overstatement, I believe most readers as they read the last page will take a deep breath and say to themselves “that’s a truly amazing story.”What makes Forrester’s story unique is that it reads just like page-turning mystery-thriller fiction. Because we are constantly asking ourselves what’s going to happen next, it’s difficult to put down. Combine that with the fact that as the story catapults forward, he unfolds a drama of dying real people snatched back from death and heartbreaking stories of real lives lost. Over and over I found myself “choked up” as I became involved in his patient stories. In the midst of the tumult and chaos of medical success and failure that he describes stands a group of doctors he labels “mavericks and misfits.” As I was swept along from one insurmountable problem to another amazing solution, I had not the slightest doubt that this part of the title Forrester chose for his book is also spot on. Without pushing the point or making judgments, he makes a compelling case that the cascade of breakthroughs he describes were driven by doctors whose creativity seemed closely linked to their sometimes egregious risk-taking and their rebellious natures. In addition to his terrific story, as a doctor I also appreciate how Forrester, like Mukherjee, often gently plants profound ideas and questions for the general public to think about. Among these ideas are that people “always” die in the course of medical progress, and that we learn more from our mistakes than our successes. Another intriguing unanswered question is whether the astonishing medical advances he describes could occur in today’s regulatory environment. As he enters the present and future, Forrester offers one final provocative question: could heart disease, which currently rules the roost as our nation’s number one killer, be deposed by the end of this decade? He says it will and he tells us why.Comparing these two outstanding books, each has its special merits. I would say Mukherjee’s writing is somewhat more scholarly and literary with interesting metaphors, Forrester’s writing has more dramatic tension and pace, and his characters are quite a bit more emotionally engaging. The importance of Forrester’s topic, the drama that percolates through every page, and the simplicity and clarity of his explanations for a lay reader make Heart Healers the best medical book that I have read.

THE HEART HEALERS recounts the entire history of heart surgery (never attempted before WWII) in such a readable fashion, I could hardly put the book down. Written by Cedars-Sinai Hospital's former Chief of Cardiology (Dr. James S. Forrester), it is highly authoritative, because the author thoroughly understands the nature of heart disease. The book is quite extraordinary, because Dr. Forrester (as a practicing, teaching cardiologist) personally experienced many of the changes in the treatment of heart disease that directly resulted from the medical breakthroughs described in his book. In fact, Dr. Forrester was or is acquainted with many of the research surgeons (many are now deceased) whose discoveries have shaped today's increasingly safe and effective treatments for heart disease. This book certainly makes the case for NOT submitting to any kind of experimental heart surgery--surgeons do kill patients, when they encounter the unexpected, or when their theories fail to take some overlooked but important factor into account. Many desperate patients died when the surgeons' experimental ideas and techniques were being perfected. But the book also explains why so few of today's patients will even need experimental surgery--medical intervention before, during, and after a heart attack is now so effective that if a patient makes it alive to a cardiac care unit, the patient will NOT die. Often repairs to the heart can be made by catheterization, without opening the patient's chest for closed- or open-heart surgery.Probably the most interesting thing that I learned, is that heart bypass and heart valve replacement surgeries do NOT prevent heart attacks. All they do is restore blood flow to the heart and prevent further heart muscle death. Bypass and valve replacement surgery is now very safe--the vast majority of patients survive the surgery and live for year(s) afterwards. But the prevention of heart attacks depends on controlling the rupture of atheromas (plaques) inside the arteries. The atheromas are like pimples in the arteries--they result from inflammation due to excess fat/cholesterol transfer through the artery walls, and from the body's natural immune response to inflammation. The way to control plaques, is to eat a heart-healthy diet--not a low-fat diet, but a diet that lowers the "bad" cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) in your blood. This diet emphasizes non-hydrogenated unsaturated fats, whole grains for carbohydrates, abundant fruits and vegetables, and adequate omega-3 fatty acids. And of course the diet needs to be supplemented with regular physical activity, avoidance of smoking, and maintenance of appropriate body weight. In older people, who already have considerable plaque in their arteries (as part of an inevitable natural process that begins in adolescence), taking a statin drug (e.g., Crestor, Lipitor) will offer further protection.THE HEART HEALERS is primarily a history of cardiology, intended for a general audience, and the stories it recounts are fascinating. Many of the breakthroughs were serendipitous--as when an out-of-control catheter injected dye directly into a patient's coronary artery, and the patient's heart merely paused, instead of stopping or going into uncontrolled fatal fibrillation as surgeons believed would happen. But the book is also reassuring in its overall conclusion that heart disease is going to disappear as the nation's number one killer, because of the tremendous advancements that have been made in cardiology. In truth, this book has inspired me to make some personal lifestyle changes--because it clearly demonstrates that eating right and exercising are worth the effort, no matter when you start.

A heart-pounding, gripping read of memoir and medical history By Connie This may be classified as a medical book, but James Forrester knows how to tell a great story. This is a combination of memoir as he interns as a cardiologist to the history of cardio diseases and how they were treated in the past through the present. He writes about the pioneers in the field of heart surgery and heart treatments, describes machinery and how they operate, all using laymen's terms that are understandable and fascinating to most people. In short, he makes the field of cardio-vascular disease and cardio injuries and their many treatment methods interesting by also giving kudos to the many unknown scientists and doctors who were mavericks, misfits and risk-takers: Dwight Harken (a WWII chief of thoracic surgery who was put in charge of treating battle-wounded soldiers), Harken's peer and rival Charles Bailey, Mason Sones, Rene Favaloro, Akira Endo to name a few. All of them had one characteristic in common: they were self-confident and were great in their fields. They also took risks that sometimes meant the death of the patient and the potential loss of their medical licenses. He also tells the stories of some of the brave patients. Not all lived, some knew full well the risk of volunteering to new surgeries and techniques and yet all of them are presented as very humane, compassionate people willing to help the medical field. All the patients in the book have unique symptoms to various kinds of coronary artery disease (CAD), heart defects or traumatic injuries to the heart, all which just a few decades ago were a sure sign of death. This book is fascinating to read not only because it is well-written, it's also well organized into four distinctive parts. We have a part on the innovators, a part on the industrial revolution of cardio surgery, the science of learning from past mistakes to improve future success, and a part medical liability/insurance/bureacracy. All parts are gripping sections to this book. They make the reader think hard about their own medical health and what they can potentially face as a heart patient down the road. It makes one realize how important it is to take care of one's heart, but it also makes one realize how quickly anyone can fall victim to hart-related diseases.Highly recommended for not just doctors and students of medicines and heart patients and survivors, but for anyone fascinated in the workings of the human heart.

The Mulholland Diaries, by L'vette Sonai

Review "I really adored reading this passionate, romantic love story that honors women, it doesn't portray Sonai's heroine as a victim." - Elissa Eaton, author of the popular novel, Too Old to be a Hooker, Too Young to be a Madam.

From the Author Embarking on this project, it was important for me to tell beautiful and honest stories. To do that, I knew I had to first be honest with myself and be willing to dig deep into my soul, giving these characters true emotion that would connect with the reader. It put me in a very vulnerable position, but fairytale, one dimensional dialogue is not something I was willing to serve to you. As a reader myself, I demand to feel a part of the story. Have it pull me in. Readers of The Mulholland Diaries series (which includes book 2, The Hollywood Girl) have told me this is what these stories give them. If so, I've done my job.It is my hope that you relate to these strong women and take away something that encourages and makes your heart smile. Enjoy. ~ L'vette Sonai

From the Inside Flap "In Beverly Hills, the good life comes at a price."L'vette Sonai's breakout novel, The Mulholland Diaries, is a hip, fast-paced, jaw-dropping and captivating story of love, excess, winning and losing. It has stirred interest in Hollywood and readers around the world. Sonai gives a glimpse into the platinum lifestyle that she at one time indulged in up close and personal.

By Shadowplay Nothing tugs at my heart the most as when two hurting and lonely people find each other in a most unexpected way! I believe that thought perfectly sums up the beautiful premise of this touching story. It might sound old to some, but for me it will never ever grow old. As one who has a hard time finding my worth at times, the healing and hope I found within these pages will forever stick with me. It’s impossible for me to forget how I felt while reading even if I happen forget the name and book title. The memories we store in our heart live and breathe with us every day of our life.Francie Davis recently felt the sting of her husband’s death along with sending her only child off to college. These huge changes bring some anxiety and excitement back into her life. She isn’t sure how she will make it on her own, but to be free of the poor treatment of her husband is a huge relief. Perhaps now, she can begin to nurture her self-confidence back to life. Alex Diederik’s life is slowly spiraling out of control. His ex-wife is wreaking havoc on his life as well as their daughter’s, and she isn’t sorry for any of it. He worries and tries his best to reach out his daughter Sam, but the harder he tries, the more she pulls away from him. With the new school year starting and new changes being made to the administrative staff, Alex is worried that his life is going to be one long year of heartbreak and chaos that he is not ready to face. With a little hesitation but a heart full of hope, I started this journey of Francie and Alex. What I discovered was with a little courage and the willingness to look past our own suffering, there is no limit to the impact that we can have on the lives of those around us. Francie’s tender heart and easy friendship brought about a major transformation in Sam while Alex’s tenderness and persistence slowly pieced together and started to heal Francie’s shattered heart. Alex not only found a reason to love again, but it was the change he saw in Sam that brought light and hope back into his world. Three hurting and lonely souls found the love they craved, the hope they desperately needed, and the healing that they never imagined would make them whole again. These incredible characters broke my heart while watching each of them suffer thinking that they weren’t worthy of the love, attention, and acceptance of anyone. Oh, how so far from the truth that was! They were each a priceless, stunning treasure, and waiting patiently until that was realized by the others was almost maddening at times. It’s almost impossible to crawl out from underneath a suffocating cloud of being told that you are worthless and unlovable, so it was amazing that each of these heavy-hearted people decided to take a leap of faith and shrug off their all-consuming burden to help someone else who needed them. Hope radiated from every corner of this story, and it touched my heart in a way that I won’t forget. Perhaps one day, I will win the war with these same struggles in my own life.Donna K. Weaver has touched my heart like few authors have. She ripped open old and new wounds, but then showed me that it is possible for all of them to finally heal. No punches were pulled, but she showed that hope can live among and conquer despair. Each of us is worth so much more than the short-sighted opinion of one person. I hope that the journey of Francie and Alex will show that our self-worth can never come from another person. It has to come from our own heart, and the heart of those who see us as we really are.

There's nothing I love more than a second chance romance but this one was a little different. Where most Second Chance stories focus on a couple trying to reconnect this one brings together two people looking for a second chance at life and love having suffered through some bad past experiences romantically. Alex and Francie meet when she takes a job as his assistant at the University he works at. Their first meeting is slightly rocky after Alex bites her head off and nobody holds a grudge better than Francie. Both are attracted to the other but will interoffice policy against dating coworkers stand in their way?Francie's character was introduced to me in the last book Lost And Found. I didn't really pay too much attention to Francie because I was so absorbed in the budding romance between Lydia and Blake and for some reason I thought, with a name like Francie, that she was...well...old. I must have glanced over the fact that she was a young single mother so I was happy I got another chance to get it right. Francie is coming off a difficult time in her life after the death of her cantankerous husband Greg. Now that he isn't around to hold her back and her son Rafe is heading to college she can focus on going back to school and getting her degree. I loved the tenacity in this woman. She managed to raise a kid with a spouse who verbally abused her almost daily and helped get him into a top college for her efforts. Francie sacrificed so much for her son that she's having to live off her home grown garden in order to eat everyday. Her survival instinct and her personality were what I loved most about her. She wasn't too hard and she wasn't too soft. Francie was a great balance of down to earth and assertive female.Alex is a divorced father to daughter Samantha who is going through a goth phase since he split with his ex wife. Aside from the fact that his ex is a complete PITA who gives him hell at every opportunity, he's also dealing with budget cutbacks at the university he teaches at which causes him to share an assistant with his sleazeball coworker adding to his frustrations. I found myself really loving Alex throughout the story even though he seemed to have a little bit of an anger issue at first. It wasn't hard to understand the stress his ex wife always seemed to put him under especially with his worries of her turning their daughter against him. Alex was a devoted father and a hard working professor who loved teaching and seeing how his ex brow beat him about his passion really brought home the fact that Alex deserved to be angry. More and more I wanted to see him happy because he was just a decent, good guy who deserved a break. What really sold me on his character was how MUCH he loved his daughter. I'm a sucker for a dad who puts his children first and the fact that Alex was a pretty buff borderline nerdy guy was perfect for me. His relationship with Samantha was difficult at times but he always put his feelings aside to mend fences with her.The romance between Alex and Francie was slow growing at first mainly because it took them forever to get out of their own way. Alex's initial gruff personality to Francie didn't help her general assessment but I was glad to see they moved past that. Office romances especially in a school setting with all the scandals in the forefront are considered to be frowned upon now. Despite their growing attraction, another office coworker makes it harder for them to enjoy anything with his constant meddling. Alex's daughter Samantha turned out to be a surprise player in the game and I really enjoyed seeing the bond between her and Francie grow stronger with every page. What started as Francie befriending the troubled girl quickly became a bond Francie couldn't live without after experiencing empty nest syndrome most parents go through when their kid leaves home. Samantha had a surprising role in not only Alex and Francie's relationship but a side story involving the sleazeball that worried me at first but soon had me cheering the goth diva.Second Chances 101 just might be my favorite in the Ripple Effect Romance series. A series that started off by introducing a set of characters and who interacted with a particular secondary character who would then get their own story. I have to say I have loved the idea of this. How one author builds the character and passes them off to another author who then nurtures and cares for them. Each one has done an outstanding job of making sweet and tender romances seem believable and deep within a few short pages. As sometimes happens with novellas for me I was bitten by the "More" bug. By the time this story came to a close I was not ready for the story to end. I loved these characters so much I could absolutely see myself enjoying a full length novel with them and where they are after. Second Chances 101 was a fantastic quick little read with a great hero and heroine that will resonate with readers both younger and older. If you love a good second chance love story and don't have much time to devote to a full novel then grab this one asap!

Each author has such a different way of writing, yet the stories all tie together so well. My heart went out to Francie. It can't be easy to basically start over in your late 30s, yet she manages to do it fairly well. I loved how Francie went back to the basics in life. She doesn't have money, so she grows and harvests a very large garden, so that she's able to cut her food costs drastically. I love how she's willing to share that knowledge with others, especially Rose. Sometimes some hard work brings such a great sense of accomplishment and a person's value is restored. My heart always went out to her boss, Alex. Life isn't always fair and it can be pretty hard. Unfortunately, Francie's first meeting with him didn't go well. Even though he let his anger get the best of him, it was obvious that his emotions don't define who he is and he went to great strides to try and fix his mistake.I really enjoyed the romance in this one. The characters were a little older and more experienced, yet it was still gradual and tentative. The Epilogue was especially great!Content: no language or violence; brief mention of underage drinking/partying and sex in exchange for favors, but they're portrayed in a way that shows it's wrong.**I received a copy in exchange for an honest review**
