Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë's only novel. Written between October 1845 and June 1846, Wuthering Heights was published in 1847 under the pseudonym ″Ellis Bell″; Brontë died the following year, aged 30. Wuthering Heights and Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey were accepted by publisher Thomas Newby before the success of their sister Charlotte's novel, Jane Eyre. After Emily's death, Charlotte edited the manuscript of Wuthering Heights, and arranged for the edited version to be published as a posthumous second edition in 1850. Although Wuthering Heights is now widely regarded as a classic of English literature, contemporary reviews for the novel were deeply polarized; it was considered controversial because its depiction of mental and physical cruelty was unusually stark, and it challenged strict Victorian ideals of the day, including religious hypocrisy, morality, social classes and gender inequality. The English poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti referred to it as "A fiend of a book – an incredible monster ... The action is laid in hell, – only it seems places and people have English names there." In the second half of the 19th century, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre was considered the best of the Brontë sisters' works, but following later re-evaluation, critics began to argue Wuthering Heights was superior. The book has inspired adaptations, including film, radio and television dramatisations, a musical by Bernard J. Taylor, a ballet, operas (by Bernard Herrmann, Carlisle Floyd, and Frédéric Chaslin), a role-playing game, and a 1978 song by Kate Bush.

From Publishers Weekly The main drama in Bronte's novel happens in a long narrative told by an elderly housekeeper to a convalescing new tenant. This story-within-a-story setup makes it well suited for audio adaptation, as Scales takes the housekeeper's part and relates the past, while West performs as the tenant and describes the present. Scales primarily uses a folksy lower-class accent, but she also makes her voice harsh and threatening when speaking as Heathcliff, the surly man at the novel's heart. West, as the bewildered tenant, manages to sound both nervous and pretentious, but his part is fairly small, especially with this abridgment, so he mostly serves to provide transitions for the housekeeper's story. The extensive abridgment generally deletes sentences and phrases rather than entire paragraphs or sections. One drawback for the audio format is the difficulty of clarifying the novel's convoluted plot and family tree, since it's harder to search back through long CD tracks than through earlier chapters of the paperback. While a little of the depth of Bronte's writing is lost in abridgment, the novel's emotional core remains intact and wrenching, and the actors' heartfelt interpretations make it easy to imagine being curled up by a warm fire listening to an absorbing tale. 227 of 250 people found the following review helpful. The only edition to buy By Joseph Guyer This review is aimed more toward the Norton edition than to JANE EYRE. We all know this is a classic. Bronte was simply a genius and a harbinger of romantic, dramatic, gothic, and horror writing. (However, it still irks me that she couldn't end a simple sentence with a period. Every declarative statement, it seems, must be qualified with a colon or semi-colon. Oh well. Sign of the times.)As for the Norton edition, it's the only one to buy. Bronte makes the assumption that you have read the Bible cover-to-cover a zillion times, and for those of us who have not read it through once, Norton's annotations are more than helpful---they're essential to understanding the novel's Christian allusions. This edition also provides the reader with critical essays, contexts of Bronte's life, Bronte's reactions to critics of her day, etc.Bottom line: you can get the Dover Thrift edition for a couple bucks, but, if you are interested in giving this classic more than a cursory read, this edition is worth the extra money.

205 of 230 people found the following review helpful. wuthering heights editions By Jordi Vilalta Lopez Rather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:A) Text oriented editions (that is, editions with few materials added: normally an Introduction, annotation, and perhaps Charlotte's Peface and Biographical Notice and some bibliographical indications).1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation, excellent introduction.2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.3. Wordsworth Classics edition. This would be a rather fine edition as befitting this collection, if it had a good 1847 text and not the heavily tampered-with Charlotte's 1850 edition. The text itself reflects accurately that of the 1900 Haworth Edition -a careful one-. The wording changes aren't perhaps so worrying nor is the toning-down of the dialectal tirades -although funny and useless-. What is worrying is the disappearance of more than six hundred paragrapph entries (I mean just the paragraphing, not the contents itself!), that makes for a different -and worse- reading experience. Very good and full -if brief- annotation. Mass-market, glued paperback.4. Heather Glen's for Routledge. One of the finest text-oriented editions, especially for the excellent Introduction and Epilogue together with its good annotation, out-of-print for rather obscure reasons. If you find still a very good to fine copy at amazon Canadian branch (or at abebooks.com, it would be a good buy.5. Orchises two-volume facsimile reprint of the 1847 edition. No notes nor any additional material. the books are well produced if a little expensive. Very interesting item, but only suitable for textual scholars or would-be scholars, or otherwise for fetish-oriented WH-maniacs.B) Study-oriented editions (i.e. editions that contain additional contextual information: early reviews, selection of Emily's poems, critical essays, chronologies of the novel or of the Bronte family...).6. Norton's Fourth Edition (current item): OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A very fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact, although annotation is still on the scarce side. Good paperback production without flaps but signature-sewn (or so it seems) and good paper and printing quality (albeit with a rather small type).7. Broadview edition by Beth Newman: it's one of the best study editions overall. There are some minor textual foibles and the annotation is decidedly scanty (to make amends for Heywood excesses) but good and accurate, and both Prof. Newman ecellent Introduction and the selection of the additional contextual material is, arguably, the finest ever (including the very interesting document on "Brain fever"). Materially speaking, it is a good paperback without flaps with good paper and printing quality (like Norton Critical, although I can't ascertain without tearing apart my copy of Beth Newman's that it be signature-sewn instead of glue-only "perfect binding). In any case a very good buy.7. Alison Booth's for Longman Cultural. Other of the very best study editions available. The text is deadly acuurate -except for some 1850 unobtrusive detail- on theClarendon 1976 reference critical edition, although the punctuation -like Norton Critical, Broadview's Newman and Oneworld's one- has been silently lightened and modernized throughout. It looks like glue-only "perfect binding" paperback, but perhaps it is signature-sewn. Paper and printing quality are good enough. The only misgiving I have is the overdone fragmentation of contextual material (good and relevant material though it is): there are 40+ items, many of them very short or they wouldn't fit into 430 pages. One of the best possible buys.8. Onewold's Classics edition. A fine paperback edition with flaps, very good paper and printing quality and (I rather surmise than know for sure) signature-sewn. The text looks like 1847 in paragraphing but it takes in toomany of 1850 "improvements" and is wrong at some places: it's short of a disaster, but rather non-reliable (in spite of the well-meant efforts by the almost anonymous editing panel who perpetrated it). Annotation is good and comprehensive enough, but the contextual material is rather scanty and run-of-the-mill non-commital.9. Barnes&Noble's Tatiana Holway edition (hardcover). To say it promptly the only fault with this lovely edition (but, as stated above in wordsworth Classics edition, a really big fault) is its accurate and reliable 1850 Haworth Edition text. Other than this, it looks as a popularly oriented edition, but with quality marks. The Introduction by Daphne Merkin is good enough, the annotation by Holway is really excellent. Supplementary material is very scanty: the "Charlotte's prefatory materials" of 1850 (prefixed to the text, which is a pity), and some comments about film and TV adaptations as well as some chosen excerpts of reviews. Material production is outstanding: nice hardcover with dust jacket, good paper and printing quality, the only good available edition in a becoming format (Clarendon Edition is very hard to come by nowadays: say one to three years to pin it down). Don't forget the Franklin Mint editions of the sixties and seventies if you are interested in a very beautiful book with a reliable 1847 text and illustrations by Alan Reingold (and nothing else).

Well, if Jane Eyre was one of those long-forgotten books, pick up a copy. To read it as an adult is a joy: it's a sweeping, disturbing, intense, thrilling, very romantic gothic love story, written in the voice of a very intense, almost claustrophobically self-aware young heroine. Jane is no Ophelia - she's a complicated, remarkable character, and a very strong female character in a genre that usually draws women as beautiful victims at best.There's something for everyone in this book: Windswept castles, difficult and neurotic family members, dark secrets about tragic former lovers, good triumphing over evil, all that good juicy stuff that makes a great romantic story. What elevates Jane Eyre is Bronte's remarkable style & skill and her sharp and complex characterizations.Trust me on this: If you don't remember it from your teens, you should give it a try now. Here is one novel that more than lives up to it's 'classic' status.

A storyteller By EKG Literary Magazine Lust Now, Cry Later by Tahanee Roberts was a good book that had the potential of being a great book had it not been for grammatical errors. I've learned the hard way never to let a friend or family member proofread my material. Pay the extra money for a professional.Elements of Style aside, should this book be published as a second edition with a reputable publisher, I guarantee Tahanee Roberts will receive the accolades she so richly deserves.Lust Now, Cry Later is the tale of two vastly different women: Sdia, a single, cautious young woman leery of a pretty boy with a jagged past; then there is Natalyia, a self-centered and promiscuous married woman sleeping with the bisexual employee that works for her husband. Without revealing the plot, the destiny of these two women takes completelydifferent turns: you get what you give.Tahanee Roberts has a well developed novel with a realistic approach to life's unexpected situations. It is a timely, easy read and I enjoyed the development of her characters. The storyline flowed - not too fast and not too slow. I appreciated the way she led me into the vision of her story; every detail of it.I call on the big publishing houses to read this book and take this talented new writer under your wing. She is a storyteller.

By Julitaus Maggie is reluctant to leave her life in Boston and move to Puerto Rico with Mike, her husband, and their two young daughters, but Mike’s enthusiasm and love encourages her to take the leap.I loved learning about Puerto Rico, its culture, and its people, through Maggie’s eyes, but the tension in the story is what made it difficult for me to put the book down.Once again, Ann Warner has given us another great read with a vivid insight to a new place and a gripping, and yet heartwarming story.

Mcauliffe Ann Warner’s ‘Vocabulary of Light’ instantly grabbed my attention; Puerto Rico and its people, culture and food have played a big part in my own life and seeing the island through the author’s eyes was a treat for me. The scene is well set (the family move from Boston to unfamiliar, troical Puerto Rico) and we hope Maggie and her family will revel in their new home. Then, as she is drawn into friendships, continues with her own writing, and involves herself in volunteerism we can’t wait to see what decision she’ll make next. Rewards and opposition confront her everywhere and the reader lives each dilemma right along with this good-hearted but struggling wife and mother.The author tackles the complexities surrounding domestic violence with realism and compassion. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good book By S. Frank Good book. When Tessa's pregnancy resulted in the loss of her job, she was left with no income and no insurance. With a mountain of bills resulting from her high risk pregnancy and the certainty that her firing had been unfair at the least, Tessa felt she had no option but to sue the company. Her lawyer wants more than just a quiet settlement, she thinks the company should be made an example of, so the case will be going to trial.Dragan has worked hard to build the company and prides himself on running a good business. He wants to know if this is a case of someone out for all she can get, or if she really was wronged. Since their lawyers won't let him talk to her directly he comes up with a plan to get her to himself for a few hours so that he can get her side of the story. He doesn't expect her to have her twin girls with her, or that a malfunction with his plane will strand them for several days at his remote Alaskan lodge. Overall, I liked Dragan. He really just wants a chance to get at the truth without a bunch of legal wrangling. He's a little cynical about peoples' motives, but that's not too surprising considering the world the way that it is. He does have a reputation of being cold and emotionless, and that's easy to see in his first reactions to the twins, though he certainly isn't cold when it comes to Tessa. He's attracted to her from the moment he sees her, even though he knows it would be a bad idea to act on it.I liked Tessa also. She hasn't had an easy time of it, and all she really wants is justice. When she's offered a lift in the good looking stranger's plane, she's cautious but she needs to make it to her destination in time for the trial. She's attracted to him, but his less than pleasant attitude about her children puts her off. It isn't until partway through the flight that she recognizes her "savior" and then she's furious. She believes that he's kidnapped her to keep her away from the trial.When the plane trouble happens, they call a truce. Tessa knows that their lives depend on his skills. Once they are safely down, they have to find a way to coexist until they are rescued. I really liked seeing the way that their close proximity slowly brought down their barriers. The attraction and passion between them was great, but even more I liked the way that they were able to share their pasts. My favorite thing was seeing Dragan become more comfortable around the children. He had been a teen growing up in Sarajevo during the war, and the things that he experienced had caused him to avoid getting close to anyone ever since. It was fun to see the way that the little girls started to melt the ice around his heart. I also liked seeing how Tessa's attitude toward him softened the more she learned about him. She still had a few instances of questioning his motives, but for the most part she really came to trust him. When one of the girls gets sick, Dragan's fear of history repeating itself is hard to see, but he handles it all well. It isn't until rescue comes and they have to part that he realizes just how big a change they have brought to his life. The question becomes if there is anything he can do to make that change permanent.I loved the conclusion and how Dragan took what he knew about Tessa and looked into what really happened. I was not surprised by what he found out. I had my doubts about Tessa's lawyer until the very end, but what she did really redeemed her in my eyes. I loved his big moment at the end and how he convinced Tessa of his feelings. The epilogue was fantastic.

The girls were just learning how to walk. Tessa was a great mom, but her daughter Maddie was a little escape artist. I loved the part where Tessa was feeding the girls spaghetti, that part had me laughing. It was nice to read a light book with very little drama.Tessa got fired from her job because she was pregnant. She was left with no income, and no health insurance. The worry caused Tessa to go into early labor. The girls had to stay in the hospital for a long time, fighting to live. The hospital bills piled up. She had no choice but to go after the company that caused her so much grief. She wanted her day in court.Dragan was the president of the company. His legal team advised him to meet her in person, and find out more about her. He had a hand in canceling her flight, so he could offer to fly her, himself in his plane. There was no way he could have predicted that his plane would malfunction, and they would have to make an emergency landing. Tessa, and her twin girls was stranded in a cabin with Dragan. She was so mad when she found out who he was. After her anger dissipated, she knew she had to at least try to get along with him. With the snow storm, they didn't know how long they had to stay there until help arrived. It was Alaska, and plane's didn't fly in snow storms. Dragan started off being cold, because of the pain he faced in his past. In the end the twins won him over. There were several moments that had me laughing along the way. The relationship between Tessa, and Dragan started off very rocky, then grew into friendship, and then something much more. There were several people that reviewed this book that didn't care for it. I on the other hand really loved this book.

Tessa is suing her former employer for discrimination and Dragon owns the company. He, in essence, kidnaps her though it wasn't planned. His intention is to get her side of the story until his private plane (that he flies) needs to land in an emergency right near his cabin out in no where.The most entertaining part of the book is Dragon's reaction to the twins. He does not like children and makes it known, yet he ends up helping out with their care while they're secluded.Tessa's lawyer is obviously modeled after Gloria Allred and it would have been a much better ending if she'd have been put in her place. Tessa comes across as very weak, so not my ideal for a romance heroine. She let her lawyer drag her around like a puppy. She didn't want to go through with the lawsuit and should have stood her ground.A good short read. Sexual encounter(s) didn't make sense for the story, but this was a romance novel.

Like a Spanish Bridget Jones By FogCityBookGal I’ve been trying to figure out how to say this without sounding like a pompous American, but I’m just going to say it straight forward because I think this book changed my mind about translated books in general.When I first started reading Thirty Postcards Away, I realized almost immediately that it was a translated book. Books originally made in another language are different than English language books. I can’t really explain it. I has something to do with the storytelling factor. They relate stories and feelings differently than our authors do. It’s something that pops me out of the story right away. I have a hard time concentrating because the language is awkward for me to read.But the thing is, I immediately liked the lead character Sofia so much, that I had to read on. Once I got over the initial uncomfortable-ness my mind felt reading it, I fell in love with the characters and story and read the rest of this book in one night. Yes, Sara Ventas, you kept me up all night!I love how Sofia makes up words and then expects people to just follow along. I love how Jamie flips out at the slightest superstition. I love how they relate to each other and seem to click even though they are both weirdos in their own right. I love how Jamie thinks Sophia is so strange even though he’s pretty strange himself. I love Manu and how he calls Sophia out when she’s being silly. And I like the super chatty best friend Paula. There is so much to love in this book, I dare anyone to not find it enjoyable.Another (lesser) issue my American brain had with the tale was that the author flip flops points of view, back and forth, telling what everyone in the scene is thinking. I happened to really enjoy this! I loved that I knew exactly what they were thinking of each other – right there – in the scene… not two pages later when relating it to a friend. There was only one time when this didn’t work for me and it was when the narrative told us something another character had been told that the character’s head we were in couldn’t have possibly known. One little glitch in an otherwise perfected art!Now about the story, I have to say the not actually having sex thing between the two main characters was hotter than a lot of sex scenes I’ve read. I really liked their attraction and how they thought each other not really knock-dead gorgeous, but “normal”, yet found little things about each other so delectable they could not stay away. I enjoyed the relationship between Manu and his friends as well, even though it wasn’t as fun as the main characters chatting in the café. I could read three more volumes of Jamie and Sofia chatting. It was very entertaining and fun.The only item in the story I didn’t quite buy was that Sophia’s ex had cheated on her in a really mean way and then she fell for someone who did (and probably will) do the same thing. Now, I love Jamie, I think the author did a really good job of making me understand his infidelity. However, I don’t think Sophia, who had been hurt like that, would accept his story so easily. And yes, she made him pay for it, but it seemed a little too easy for Jamie to pull her strings.Overall, I loved this book and I’m glad I pressed myself to give it a chance. Would like to read a sequel!

The Spanish characters seem to talk more, they take month-long vacations and seem indifferent to their careers. In their thirties and forties, they still behave like teenagers. At least they have the compulsory gay friends to confide in that one needs for a good rom-rom.The protagonist of this story, Sofia, moves from Majorca to Malaga after the breakup of a long relationship. She runs into a handsome man who lives one floor below in her apartment building. Jaime is divorced but has a demanding girlfriend who he is beginning to get tired of.Jaime and Sofia keep running into each other in the elevator. There is chemistry. They go on a couple of dates -- more chemistry -- and then disaster, a comic mixup that breaks up the relationship just as it's beginning to catch fire. How will they put it back together? That's where the postcards of the title come in.There are some amusing moments in this book but the generally immature characters and their endless talk about superstitions, to say nothing of their illogical actions, wear down the reader so that by the closing chapters one is thinking, 'get together already and let's get this over with.' At the end of the day, they are not as cute as they think they are -- and a bit too old to be cute anyway.
