Living in Puerto Rico might sound like a dream to some people, but for Maggie Chase it’s more of a challenge than she’s looking for. Maggie, who has a PhD in biochemistry, agreed to put her husband’s career first after the birth of their daughters, and that has now led to Mike accepting the position of CEO of the Lillith Pharmaceuticals plant in San Juan. Struggling to fit into the bilingual, Latin culture of Puerto Rico in the late 1980s, Maggie’s adjustment is aided by the friendships she develops. Friendships that bring both dark and light into her life, and eventually demand of her an inner strength and resilience she didn’t know she was capable of. Vocabulary of Light is character-driven fiction in the tradition of Barbara O’Neal, Jodie Picoult, and Anne Tyler.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another exciting, emotionally-involving read. By Margaret Johnson Maggie and her husband have the perfect marriage, and that’s the only reason Maggie consents to uproot herself yet again to move with him and their family to Puerto Rico. As she struggles to establish her career and family in her new surroundings, Maggie finds new light and adventure. But in the light, there are always shadows, and Maggie must make choices about how involved she should get. And is it ever a good idea to hide things from the man you love?I love Warner’s books, and in this new offering she makes us live and breathe Puerto Rico in the 1990s . The dilemmas of Maggie and her new friends are emotionally engaging, and as always, her characters are brought vividly to life. We care deeply as Maggie tries to do the best for everybody, and ask ourselves “what would you do in this situation?”Another exciting, emotionally-involving read.

By Julitaus Maggie is reluctant to leave her life in Boston and move to Puerto Rico with Mike, her husband, and their two young daughters, but Mike’s enthusiasm and love encourages her to take the leap.I loved learning about Puerto Rico, its culture, and its people, through Maggie’s eyes, but the tension in the story is what made it difficult for me to put the book down.Once again, Ann Warner has given us another great read with a vivid insight to a new place and a gripping, and yet heartwarming story.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read this twice! By P. A. Mcauliffe Ann Warner’s ‘Vocabulary of Light’ instantly grabbed my attention; Puerto Rico and its people, culture and food have played a big part in my own life and seeing the island through the author’s eyes was a treat for me. The scene is well set (the family move from Boston to unfamiliar, troical Puerto Rico) and we hope Maggie and her family will revel in their new home. Then, as she is drawn into friendships, continues with her own writing, and involves herself in volunteerism we can’t wait to see what decision she’ll make next. Rewards and opposition confront her everywhere and the reader lives each dilemma right along with this good-hearted but struggling wife and mother. The author tackles the complexities surrounding domestic violence with realism and compassion. No reader of this book will ever again ask, ‘Why didn’t she just leave?’ Knowing when to speak and whether or not your ‘help’ is what is needed are conflicts we all must face and there is seldom a clear-cut answer.I had to keep turning pages to see where Maggie’s decisions led and how and if her relationships with her husband, children, friends, and career worked out. Ms. Warner follows every plot thread to its completion and leads us through well-paced plot twists to a wise and gratifying end.
