Decades ago, a shotgun wedding locked Edith into a life with a husband she’s not sure she ever loved. Now, at a ‘certain age,’ she feels like a ghost in her own life, wondering where all this came from: the scornful husband, the mercenary brood of grandchildren, the well-meaning but controlling daughter-in-law. Then one Christmas morning Edith wakes to find her husband dead, and the role she played for so long crumbling. Soon questions arise about her husband’s death, and papers discovered in his pockets send Edith unraveling secrets of the man she thought she knew. Edith’s son Brian is the focus of her life, but he may not be as perfect as she thought. Revelations that he might be cheating shock her. As Edith investigates the mysteries of her family, she may just find who she truly is.

For me it was a story of guilt, giving up, disillusionment, unhappiness, and settling for second best or maybe even fifth or sixth best. But the real story beneath all the emotion, is it is never too late to begin again.Edith is in her sixties, she was born in the time period that demanded marriage if one committed the unpardonable and became pregnant; their lives became a study of settling, making do, just existing, staying together because you must and avoidance. But Edith will find after the sudden death of her husband on Christmas morning that she is indeed a major player in her life, by trying to piece together her husband's life from pieces of paper found in his many pockets, she will find second chances, secrets long-buried, a daughter-in-law she actually likes rather than hates, a husband that finally tried to step up, extended family, and a son that was far from the perfect man she thought she had raised. Edith searches her soul and her life and finds she really doesn’t like what she has become. Who was her husband really and what secrets did he harbor? Between the secrets and mysteries her husband’s life contained and her son presently has in his life, Edith and her daughter-in-law Kathleen are on an investigative trail as they discover the men behind their marriages.Edith will become her own woman and begin to live life, broaden her horizons, and circumstances. I looked back on this story and felt, what a lot of life wasted, then I took a breath and it dawns on me, what a lot of life is left to live to the fullest! The author shows it is never to late to live and love to its fullest, and it is never to late to forgive.I received this book from the Publisher and Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Never Too Late is the story of re-awakening, learning about oneself, family and moving forward.Edith woke up Christmas morning to a dead husband. She was nearly 70 years old and had been in a loveless marriage since the beginning. She had a son, Brian, a daughter-in-law that she didn't really like, two grandchildren that she really didn't know and very few friends. After the funeral she found an envelope that was her husband's. It had many mysterious receipts in it that she wanted to investigate. Kathleen, her daughter-in-law offered to help and for the first time Edith genuinely takes the time to get to know her. They become friends. All is not well with Kathleen and Brian either.Secrets can be very destructive. Edith always felt her husband kept things from her and now finding this envelope proves that he did. Brian is keeping secrets from Kathleen.Edith in trying to learn about her husband and make changes in her life and relationships discovers that he had a whole other life and that she didn't really know him at all. She encourages her son to reveal his secrets to his wife so that their marriage can be saved and not be a repeat of Edith's.Edith is learning not only let go of the past and move forward but she is getting to know herself too. I found the story good but at times I felt it got a little slow in some places. The main characters were well developed and the reader can certainly see where they are coming from in relation to what is going on at the time.I received this book free from the publisher for review purposes. Fischer for Readers’ FavoriteIn a heartbreaking and heartwarming tale, author Jo Barney provides her readers with another fantastic book, Never Too Late. Follow the story of Edith, a woman in her sixties who finds herself in a melancholy time of life. Never coming first, always putting others before herself, she's lived a life that many women would find familiar. But Edith puts up with it, never complaining, for the good of her family. When her husband passes away at Christmas, and she finds some papers in his pockets, she realizes that many of the things she held to be true are not. And when she finds out that her beloved son, Brian, might be an adulterer, her life view crumbles a little more. As she continues to investigate the truth of her family, she might just find out who she is as well.I so enjoyed Never Too Late. It was an incredibly well-written story that sucked me in from the very beginning and kept me turning the pages until the book was done. Author Jo Barney has done a fantastic job of creating characters, especially Edith, who readers will connect with, care about, and continue to think of long after the book is finished. If that isn't the mark of a wonderful author, I'm not sure what is. Any reader who loves fiction with a strong female lead, or just a great book in general, would enjoy Never Too Late. I am so pleased to recommend this book, and certainly hope that author Jo Barney is hard at work on her next novel. I, for one, will be in line to get it when it is done!

Tina Barry's first collection of poems and short fiction, Mall Flower is a strip-tease of voices and situations that will leave you longing to know what happens in the end. From the "Mall Flower" who struts her youth, to a well-mannered vagina cordially inviting the reader to a party in "Party at my Place", one watches a cinematic poem take place on the page. There is romanticism in the way Barry discovers the life around her. In "Peonies", though noticing the unattractiveness of a neighbor, she still dresses "carefully." Barry extends images that would fill up a football field. In "Life of Charlotte", she creates slices of life: failed marriage blamed on the stains of a young bride's dress coupled with a theatrical moon engorged on the attention of the watchers below. You will want to exist around Barry just to be penned into one of her carefully articulated pieces. ~ Aimee Herman, author of the poetry collections to go without blinking and woke up feeling, and the chapbook rooted. Mall Flower by Tina Barry is a collection of minimalist stories and poems about ordinary characters undergoing extraordinarily loss. A child, hungry for attention before her parents’ divorce, rakes the hair on her father’s legs with a doll’s comb; a family in need of saving, prays to a god in a pink negligee; outside a sweetly wallpapered bedroom, a neighbor’s dead deer is trussed to a child’s swing set. Brassy, unbeautiful, but very cool characters. No matter how hard they try, they falter with their “crowns tilted at unflattering angles.” They are us. And how fortunate we are to have Barry’s amusing voice bringing us these beautiful quirky stories. ~ Barbara Henning, author of several novels and poetry collections, including A Day Like Today, A Swift Passage, My Animal Eyeball, and Cities and Memory. Tina Barry is a master of the image that packs it all in: social commentary, pathos, humor, you name it. In her stunning debut, she revels in the glorious absurdity of growing up and getting old. No matter how outrageous Barry’s poems are, no one would ever doubt their truth. There’s an exactness to her images and a candor to her voice that--even as it’s whispering--screams authenticity. You should enjoy reading Mall Flower everywhere poetry is allowed: the public pool, the bedroom, even the food court. ~ Joanna Fuhrman, author of six books including The Year of Yellow Butterflies, The Emotive Function and Pageant. Mall Flower is a combination found object, chronicle, and artful synthesis. Writer Tina Barry tricks out her interplay of short fiction and poetry with beautifully rendered recollections of family, teenage fragility, and workshops at their most ferocious, wistful, and true. Again and again I found myself happy to trust the untrustworthy. Barry writes, “Gone is the word for enchantment,” then lays the groundwork for a sorcery which disdains vocabulary because, well, things happen, folks. Barry makes them happen. I so admire these poems, this book, and your decision to read it. ~ Sarah Sarai, author of The Future Is Happy Tina Barry’s aptly-titled Mall Flower shimmers with delicate and gritty insights. Barry is a writer of great warmth, intelligence and wit; the poems and stories in her delightful debut collection will move and surprise you. ~ Jessica Hagedorn, playwright and author of the novels Toxicology, Dream Jungle, The Gangers of Love and Dogeaters.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Poignant and Evocative By Jeffrey Miller One of the joys of reading is discovering a new author and immediately falling in love with his or her writing. Such was the case when I heard about Tina Barry’s Mall Flower. The stories and poetry in this collection are just as much visceral as they are bittersweet images and vignettes of school, broken homes (and lives) and lost souls trying to find meaning in a world that is not always fair and kind. And don’t get me started on the cover! If you can forgive me for saying, the cover rocks! But it’s what is inside what counts and there’s plenty to move you. I was immediately drawn into the short fiction and poetry in this collection by Ms. Barry’s poignant use of language and imagery. Whether it’s a reference to Bill Murray and Gilda Radner as Emily Litella talking about “all the violins” in movies on Saturday Night Live (which by the way is one of my favorite SNL moments!) in the story “What’s All This” or the terribly painful “Table Talk,” where the protagonist’s mother listens in on a phone conversation about her father’s latest misdeeds—“Mother sits at the dining room table, legs thrust underneath, a filmy nylon nightgown brushing her knees, her calves dry and scratched. I’m stretched out beneath the table watching her feet rub together like another pair of fussing hands”—Barry is nothing short of brilliant with the prose and poetry in this collection. To be sure, these are stories and poems that will stay with you long after you have read them.Jeffrey Miller,Ice Cream Headache

By Deirdre NYC Tina Barry’s luminescent collection of prose and poetry hops from beds to back yards, from an apartment building filled with bitterly disappointed mothers and their children, to a bowling alley bathroom. And of course there are the moments of bliss and disappointment at the mall.Barry excavates the poignant absurdities of everyday life. Many of these gems touch on the painful truth of family and the powerlessness of children who can only observe as life spins apart. We watch from the apartment window with her as Dad drags a too-large stuffed tiger Chanukah gift through the snow. We sit together under the dining room table and notice Mom’s stocking feet rubbing together in the agitation of an abandoned woman. Her observations place us in each strange locale, buying cigarettes at Mr. Pipe, or playing Crazy Eights on the make out table, or sitting on the smelly plaid couches in Billy’s basement and resting “…my head on his shoulder, because, well, B.O. or not it’s Beau & it’s so cool that maybe Beau & I could be a couple like Sue & Billy.”Barry has chewed over a slice of the national experience and saved us the frosting. Come share in her most interesting delicacies.Welcome to America.

When his childhood friend Verity is found at the foot of Beachy Head, barely alive, Harry's life is thrown into turmoil. He can't accept that the happy go lucky girl he grew up with would try to kill herself. He should know. He was closer to her than anyone – wasn't he? As Verity lies suspended in a coma, damaged beyond repair, Harry tries to uncover what went so horribly wrong in her life. Haunted by memories of their childhood, and by the knowledge that what they shared is lost forever, Harry begins piecing together the last few weeks of Verity's life. He enlists the help of another childhood friend, Adam, and Verity's business partner Sam. Sam is as baffled as Harry, but Adam thinks Verity's suicide attempt was the inevitable consequence of a life which was clearly spiraling out of control. The deeper Harry gets, the more questions remain unanswered. Why was Verity's flat burgled? Why was she secretly seeing a psychiatrist? And, for Harry, the most haunting question of all: why did Verity kiss him, all those years ago, and then banish him from her life? If Harry can't find the answers, he may have to face the fact that perhaps he never really knew Verity at all...

Carmen is a bad girl, spoiled rotten to the core. But, she doesn't want to be that way...she wants to be good. And, she is good...very good at what she does best...luring men into her web of intrigue, leading them into her world of desire, then dashing their hopes to bits. She tries to maintain control, but this man is different from all the rest. But, by then it's too late. She is "damaged goods" waiting to be fixed. Trying to heal from a broken body and a broken spirit, she turns to her best friend who turns to God, and tries to persuade Carmen to follow her to a better life. Review This book is NOT for the faint of heart.  Full of passion, sex, and violence it will put you on a rollercoaster of emotions.  Get ready to be titillated, excited and satiated beyond your wildest imagination.  Carmen will drive you to ecstasy and back.

From the Author Pinky D. is my alter ego.  Nothing like my "other" self, she is sexy, hot and passionate. After years of holding back, I am finally letting my inner "bad girl" have her way.  The result is this ecstatic tale of seduction and intrigue for the mature of mind, body and spirit, only.

About the Author I will never admit who I really am or where I came from.  I am like a rock star from "Kiss" without the makeup or the tight pants.  This book is my "costume" for the inner me to wear to the Life Party that I have created through my characters.  I hope you enjoy the ride to passion.
