2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A novel for people on holidays! By Amandajane I had a love/hate relationship with the novel Knowing Liam Riley by Sue Mackender. The book starts out strongly, in the middle it dragged and finished strongly, if I hadn't been reviewing it for NetGalley I probably would not have finished the book. The novel revolves around four very different women, from different backgrounds, different ages but the one thing that they have is common is a man by the name of Liam Riley. The premise is how their lives are affected by this man.The novel is separated into four books for each woman, so that we can have a good grip on each characters background and how theygot to the stage that they find themselves in.I adored the first book and the protagonist Joanne, we are given a real understanding of how Joanne became the woman she is. From a young girl to a young woman she has many horrendous things happen to her with no family support to fall back on. Her character is one that shows how one can triumph over tremendous adversity.I also, enjoyed the second book which is about a woman called Lizzie who also has a tough life but for different reasons than Joanne, for one thing she has the support of her family. As Lizzie is growing up it is her trusting nature and her family's troubles that cause many of her difficulties. We now come to the third book about an Artist Ava who lives in Malta with her husband and basically has the kind of life most of us can only dream of. Although, that is not enough for Ava, she is known to have affairs with her male models among others. The only feelings that I could drum up for this protagonist was dislike and disapproval.Ava has a daughter, a young woman called Imogen, she was a character that I could sympathise and empathise with. Yes, she makes poor decisions and lives in her own little world but with understanding of her background and her mother being Ava she hasn't had the best role model.I didn't enjoy the third book whatsoever, it just didn't seem to run with the quality of the previous two books. For me, it just dragged and I almost gave up on the whole novel because of it. I guess it didn't help as a mother and wife, I found the character Ava to be pathetic and distasteful. We now come to the fourth and final book, where we learn how all the characters are connected to Liam Riley. After the third book, I didn't care much about the ending and only persisted because of how much I liked the first two books and their characters Joanne and Lizzie.Liam Riley appears throughout the novel so it's not too hard to work out how they are all connected, which leaves very little mystery to want to keep reading to the end.Strangely, the last ten percent of the book was great and I saw the wonderful writing Mackender is capable of, like in the first two books in the novel.I believe that there will be people who will like it and probably enjoy it as a holiday read. Personally, it's not my style I found this book to be more like a Soap Opera and I think it would probably make a good mini series in the right hands.I hope that Sue Mackender continues with her writing and that her next book is able to bring the dynamics together all the way through to write not just an average but great novel.
