By Itsy Bitsy Book Bits Prelude of Lies, by Victoria Smith is a Paranormal Adult Fiction Romance book. The book follows the story of two sisters who are fighting against their “evil step-grandmother” for the right to the inheritance of a property and money left to them by their grandfather. Throughout the course of the book, the girls are met with many complications that threaten the dream of re-opening the vacation grounds that they grew up on and their grandfather once loved. This story is told by a narrator, focusing in on the circumstances of each girl during different moments of the book.Sydney and Daisy have just inherited their grandfathers vacation property in the woods; a place where they grew up as children. This is a place that they and their grandfather loved. It is now completely run down and in need of serious repair and updating, but the girls are fighting against the clock. Their grandfather’s wife, their step- grandmother, who they’ve nicknamed Vile Violet, is trying to cash in on their inheritance and stop the success of the renovations and the opening of the camp grounds so she can turn it into a casino. If the girls do not succeed, due to a technicality in their grandfather’s Will, Violet will inherit everything, leaving the girls with nothing. With a host of friends stepping up to help, the girls battle paranormal activity, pranks, a kidnapping, and two love triangles (among more obstacles) to make their and their grandfathers dream come true.Sydney is the more conservative worrier of the two sisters. She is the caretaker and is very protective of her sister Daisy. Sydney does not buy into the paranormal activity on the property, or to the idea of ghosts, although she can actually see and communicate with them. She is skeptical and cynical at times throughout the book. However, the reader has the opportunity to watch Sydney grow throughout the book and even begin to open up as two love interests enter her life to help her and her sister open the property. Is one of the men the man of her dreams? Can they both be trusted?Daisy is the wild child and free spirit. She is full of personality and spunk. She is the adopted sister of Sydney, even though Sydney doesn’t see it that way. Daisy comes from a tumultuous past and fears turning into the woman who birthed her. She doesn’t understand why her birth mother chose drugs and men over her and sometimes wishes she has answers. Can she get them? Daisy has a difficult time committing to a relationship for fear of turning into her birth mother, but she likes the feeling of falling for someone. Daisy’s old flame re-enters her life with a crew ready to help her and her sister re-open the grounds; but, Daisy also meets a new man who piques her interest. Will she finally be able to settle down?Prelude of Lies was a well written and engaging story. There are several characters in the book and Smith tries to give us a deeper glimpse into each of their lives. Her characters are mostly well-developed, but there are so many characters that the reader can become confused at times in trying to keep them all straight, or understand where all of the characters fit in. There are also many smaller storylines occurring within the larger picture, which keeps the reader fully engaged, but also sometimes confused in keeping it all straight. I found myself rereading passages at times to remind myself/figure out that the book had switched focus to another character. There is mild violence, profanity, and some sexual situations. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would give it four out of five stars.
