Breaking the Fall opens as Sherry Berger, a therapist on the northwest side of Chicago, contemplates how to reconcile her apparently middle class life with the life and death emergencies of her clients. Sherry has secrets of her own and she hopes that these secrets won’t impact her ability to help her clients. As the reader meets Sherry’s clients, she’ll see Sherry’s frustration and agony. Sherry tries to help them overcome barriers to their healing that our society places before them, often unexpectedly and at crucial times in their lives. Her clients are people that we meet everyday, but whose stories are hidden from view. They often face obstacles to achieving their goals, maintaining their equilibrium, and in some cases, even surviving. Will Sherry decide to continue to work with these challenges or will she choose another path? Will she resolve her own family issues or will her clients’ problems engulf her?

About the Author Lisa Sachs grew up in New York and lives in Illinois with her husband. She was a social worker in the Chicago area for over 25 years and that background informs her writing. After listening to her clients’ stories for all that time, Lisa decided to write about some of them. Doing that she found her own voice. In Breaking the Fall and other stories that she has written, Lisa gives us a peek into the lives of people who live in our midst but are often invisible.

THE FRAILTIES OF MODERN LIFE By John Sibley The characters in the author's book, show how the 'voids' that underpin human existence in our daily lives---can be traced ,tragically to the pursuit of the bitch goddess of success. Material trinkets and 60 inch HD pixel screens has not been enough to cocoon us from living in am market driven culture that turns even human love, compassion, and empathy into something you can buy at the global market place.Or paying the therapist,Sherry, the main character in the book, an hourly fee to get relief. The 'bourgeofication" of western society, especially in America, since the Second war,has strangled us emotionally and spiritually: Hedonism wins: the unborn child dies. A good book about the frailties of 'modern life' and how hyper-prosperity has left most of us feeling unfulfilled and anchored in American ideals that are not "Breaking the Fall ".

Realistic and hopeful portrait of Social Worker's life and job By Betsy Fuchs This books is very readable, in fact I read it straight through in 2 days. It illustrates with stories about the social worker Sherry and her family, co-workers and clients what a tough job social workers have. The stories Lisa Sachs has chosen to include in “Breaking the Fall” are realistic and sometimes very sad because Sherry’s clients face a variety of problems (health, financial, abuse, family) and are often hampered by the onerous requirements and lengthy time it takes to get financial and other support from government programs. Yet with the social worker Sherry’s caring guidance, her clients often persevere and find ways to face and overcome their challenges and get the services they need. I highly recommend reading this book and congratulate Lisa Sachs sharing her stories and insights with us.
