The One
When Tom Marshall knocks on Paton McLean's door, she's sure he is the one for her. Hiring him as a gardener and then a handyman, she keeps him around long enough for their relationship to develop into something more than friendship. Tom has other ideas about their future, however, and struggles to come to terms with Paton's certainty that they are meant to be together. It is only in one final karmic twist that Tom realises he's made the wrong decision…
Involving an unrequited romance and karma love, this is one short read you won't be able to put down. If you've ever loved someone and lost them, and then wondered if they ever regretted losing you, this short story is for you.
That Damn Lift
After a corporate takeover that results in new management and his demotion, Ross is biding his time until he retires. Unfit and unhappy that the lift in the building has been out of order for longer than necessary, he decides to confront his new boss, Ernestine, a cold woman brought in to manage staff layoffs.
Desperate to make Ernestine understand that the lift is a symbol of change (and not for the better), he commits an act of defiance that both redeems and costs him...
If you've ever been downsized, restructured, mergered, redeployed or retrenched (and who hasn't these days?) then this short story—a 21st Century metaphor in the form of an office drama—is for you. You'll cheer for Ross—a most unlikely hero—as he finally finds the courage to finally say what he thinks. And who knows? Three lovely stories in a single package By Amazon Customer Author Diane Lee packs three of her immensely enjoyable short stories into a neat little package here.Of the three captivating stories, 'Must have hair' is my personal favourite. It captures the subtle romantic chemistry between a painter and his muse, Monique - a pretty young ladyon the elusive search for her better half (who according to her must have hair, in addition to a few other qualities). Though Monique never considered the painter a suitor probably because he's bald, we realise throughout the story that there is nobody else better suited for her. And the question a reader asks himself/herself while turning each page is whether Monique would ever realise that. That damn lift is a thought providing story about how the protagonist decides to stand up to the office bully after remaining a passive victim for too long. The One is another endearing story in this collection. It is about a two people who enter a relationship; while the woman believes that the two are meant for each other, the man thinks otherwise and moves on eventually searching for greener pastures. The story makes us think; sometimes we never realise what we had till it's too late. The stories complement each other in the package very well and is definitely recommended for short fiction lovers!

Beautifully written, moving and intriguing, I was captivated throughout. Tackling topics of finding 'the one', workplace politics and modern dating, the stories beautifully convey the complexities of life. The only thing - I got lost in the worlds of the characters and now I must know more. I hope the author will bring out more!
